Greetings, Vintage Yamaha Enduro Fans! I'm quite new here but not brand-new; I've been using the forums recently to research my '75 DT175B, and I've posted a couple times already in the '74-'76 subforum. Like it says up top, it's common courtesy to make an introduction.

Going WAY back (promise to be fairly brief!) I've been turning wrenches my whole life. Apparently, age 3-4-ish, I repaired my little red wagon myself when the wheel fell off - put it back on and mushroomed over the end of the axle with a rock. Then it was on to crappy little pull-start mini-bikes, around age 10-11. Got my first socket set for Christmas when I was 10, and still have every last piece of it in regular use to this day. My first Yamaha was a CT3-175 when I was a teenager, and my second was a '75 MX-125. My older stepbrother used to blow up his Suzuki TS-90 routinely, every other month or so, and it was quite spectacular that time his rotary valve disintegrated. His experiences gave me a lot of peeks inside 2-stroke engines. I was a subscriber to "Cycle" magazine and Kevin Cameron was like a god to me. I did a lot of fiddling with my two Yamahas back then, experimenting with smoothing and matching the ports, adding expansion chamber, rejetting, fork and shock kits (remember "TricKit" kits?) and so on. Then I got my driver's license and first car, and the non-street-legal dirt bikes went by the wayside. From there, I went on to become a mechanical engineer. I am now 56 years old, with a lifetime of various bikes behind me, including an RD-400, Honda XL-500, Yamaha FJ1100, Honda Hurricane 1000, BMW K100RS, and BMW R1200GS. I sold the GS a couple years ago when I realized I wasn't using it to its full intent and potential, with the idea that I'd find something else appealing. It took until just a couple months ago when I stumbled across that '75 DT175B, a barn find that had been put away in 1978, essentially complete and original, with 1928 miles.

I do almost all my own work, but prefer mechanical tinkering to cosmetic stuff. I have never learned how to operate a proper paint gun, but I can't offhand think of anything mechanical I won't tackle. In my career as an engineer, I work at a small manufacturing company, and I have full access (and in fact full control) over a complete machine shop including a genuine Bridgeport and a Hardinge Super Precision toolroom lathe, plus bandsaw, surface grinder, small heat-treating equipment, and welding equipment. The company I work for, Central Tools, has several business units but the core unit is measuring tools for the automotive industry. Once upon a time we offered dial-indicator timing kits for 2-strokes, but of course sales dried up to zero as emissions regs killed the 2-stroke back in the 1970's. Yes, I do have a vintage dial indicator set from the company archives, and yes I have used it to time the DT175. Too bad that stuff is all gone, as I perceive there might be some limited interest from this community. But that was back in the day of screw machines, and those machines and all the tooling for them are long gone, so we aren't bringing those kits back unfortunately.

Hi All,
My name is Bob and I am from Alliance, Ohio. I run a small machine shop and work on small engines. I am a certified 2 stoke nut and love vintage bikes. My other interests are old farm tractors and antique engines. I am currently finishing up a 79 DT125 for my son. It got a complete down to frame overhaul including new powder coat and paint all around. Yami Blue with white fenders. Most all of my other bikes have had the same treatment. I look forward to getting and giving help wherever I can!

Hello Enduro Fans! I am happy to have found this site. I do not currently own a Yamaha Enduro, but will be buying one in the next several days.

As a kid growing up in Superior, WI I was always enthralled with the teanagers I saw riding around on dirt bikes. This was the early '80s, so a lot of those bikes were 70's enduros. I never owned one, but as an adult I have owned several late 70s Japanese street bikes. The last was a Yamaha XS400 barn bike. I am a willing, if not entirely genius mechanic (I can read a manual and follow instructions).

I haven't ridden for a few years now. I suppose I am having a mild mid-life thing because I've been dreaming about those enduros I always loved. I looked at buying one in original running condition, or a restored one. I decided I want a project. I've found what the seller claims is a 1976 DT360 with 3260 original miles. It is hasn't been ridded in years, and has been under a tarp outdoord. The motor cycles freely (I have yet to verify) and all the parts are there. I'll post pictures when I've verified everything. $175 price tag doesn't hurt too much either way.

Hey guys,
I’m Evan from Dallas, TX. I just picked up my first little Yamaha. It’s a 1974DT100A, all complete minus a missing battery and the tank latch. I’m hoping to give this bike a complete restoration. I’m used to riding motorcycles, a little tinkering here and there, but never a total rebuild. My only question so far is, where do I get carb and head gaskets? They’re so hard to find! I’m looking forward to all you’re help guys!

Welcome Evan!

Head gasket is still available from Yamaha. #19 in diagram. www.partzilla.com/catalog/yamaha/motorcy...a/crankcase-cylinder

Carb gasket might be a little trickier... I'm sure they are available someplace like Sudco, maybe a photo of your carb would help.
