Nice Pair! was created by Schu

Well a pair of MX250As are now parked in my barn with the rest of the herd. I picked them up an hour from home on my son’s request. He bought them and will fund the refurbishing. I get to do the work…..

The seller used to race and decided he is too old to even think of riding. His wife was looking over his shoulder to ensure they left on my trailer. He was disappointed that I couldn’t get the bike started. Typical story. “It ran when he parked it years ago”. It’s not getting spark. The other bike was given to him as a parts bike.

He said when he stopped racing years ago he had the bike rebuilt at the local Yamaha shop that he dealt with thru his racing years. He said it has very few hours on it after the rebuild. He said it was a complete rebuild of top and bottom including new Yamaha crankshaft.

The bike is very complete and I am hoping I can get it to fire and run before I start tearing it down. He got both bikes for $1,500. He also left me a stack of $100 dollar bills to get started on it.

Hope I can get it running…….

Schu I think we all know the 1st bike will turn out nice with you working on it and the 2nd (parts bike) will not end up being a (parts bike) at all and end up being a nice runner as well at least that’s how my similar bike purchases end up

Ha. Thanks for your confidence in me but I really struggle with electrical issues and I was really disappointed when I checked for spark and found none……

I won’t get at this task for a while. I have four exhaust pipes that I roasted in a bonfire over the weekend that need to be sandblasted, primed and painted.

There are many aftermarket ignition systems available for these bikes, years ago I was a technician on electric 36v, 48v forklifts and only a handful of us in my town were doing this kind of work, everyone looked at us as sorcerers while it actually came quite easy to me and more satisfying than the mechanical part of internal combustion forklifts. It is usually a simple solution as in bad connections due to loose wiring or corrosion, use the kiss method and keep it simple, use a quality analog and digital multimeter and learn how to use them properly, when I see people asking for values to test source coils and are getting all sorts of readings, source coils usually quite durable and change parts and still have a no start is why you see a lot of bikes for sale and the ignition side covers are off. Your bikes should be electronic ignitions which sometimes are a little bit harder sometimes to diagnose but you have two bikes and even in the Yamaha manual sometimes the test procedure is try a known good part to verify a parts failure, good luck I’m sure we will see a video soon of it running

I’ve been busy working on the “nice pair” of MX250s. We are going to complete the better of the two first, and then maybe, just maybe we will dive into the parts bike and see what we can do with it.

I’m not doing a restoration write up. Just simply sharing some photos. As I had mentioned in the initial post, this is my son’s purchase and he is funding the rebuild. So far he has $1,500 into the purchase of both bikes and $700 into parts. He still needs tires, tubes, and grips. And probably a few small things I’m forgetting at the moment.

Today I disassembled the parts bike and scavenged what we needed. Then I boxed up the remaining spares parts and stored them in the barn for another day. It’s been fun so far, but we are now at a point where we need to setup the new HPI ignition and get it fired up. Did I mention that I suck at electrical.
