On all flywheel magneto points systems, the source coil is going to be mounted in pretty much the same position as a CDI source coil would be.

If you can find a CDI coil that fits a points backplate, and CDI unit that will work, you have a working CDI ignition.

All magnet triggered systems are based on those made for chainsaws and garden machinery. They work reasonably well, and if they work out of the box, are generally reliable.

That link for the TY ignition looks really good. I guess you use the TY heavy flywheel.
But would the system work for a lot of the members here with say any 175 CT/DT etc as all run the same stator plate mounting
I guess flywheel compatibility would be the important thing to find out.

I would think it would work for anyone whose bike had a Hitachi points ignition stock? Maybe the TY250 one would work on DT1 motors?

I have no personal experience with Rex's... I know members who have. Hopefully if you have to contact them they will respond and fix the problem.

I just emailed their tech support. Hopefully I'll hear something from them. I do want to just check where it's timed and then go from there.
I have an aircraft seat project that I need to get completed and then I can get back to the fun stuff.

I was deciding between the REX and Vape. I used the REX mainly for the bolt on and timed simplicity. And keeping the keyed flywheel.

I really want to get the DT running well. Then I will disassemble and make it all nice. The new ignition parts really make the bike look even scroungier than it is!

Perhaps you could pull the plug out, ground it against the head and run the motor with a drill to get it firing the spark. Then you could verify the timing with a light.

My ignition came with the slotted back plate. I'm not sure if he sells those anymore. This type was available as well, with the fixed mounting points. If the coils are in the same place as stock, the spark should be too unless there is a wiring issue.

Clegg,

I do wish you the very best of luck with the Rex Ignition however, if you had been around a few more months you might have read the verbal exchange Rex had here with one of our moderators. Our guy kept his composure 100% while informing Rex that Yamaha’ Enduros used a far different method of charging the battery and/or just how the electric system worked than Rex was describing. Then there’s Rex’s ‘help department that is truly hit and miss…’

So, these bikes were designed to run on breaker points, it’s only money which in fact is currency reserve notes…..

You can also drill a hole in the flywheel so that you can loosen the stator plate and adjust the timing without having to remove the flywheel each time.

I actually went over to my shop today and indexed the flywheel at 2.9 btdc but I could not get my drill to stay chucked on the shaft to check with a timing light.  I don't want to mess up the threads on the crank.

Are the threads on the crank end 12x1.25  or 1.5?
