This type of ignition originates from systems first used on chainsaws and garden machinery, which was widely copied when the patents expired.

They are triggered by the magnets passing the poles of the source coil.

Some years ago I helped Marcus Rex develop ignition systems for the TY175 and TY250 Mono, supplying him with engines and technical help and advice.

My mate bought that kit for his 400 and drilled out the plate into slots, he had the same situation, lots of kickbacks. Seems a better option than discarding the key.

I would imagine the warranty is likely to be void if the backplate is modified?

As soon as I get a chance, I will check for timing issues. I would highly assume that modifying the stator plate would for sure void any warranty. Good idea for ease of timing and retaining the key in the flywheel though.

Is the seller of your ignition not able to provide any support?

I have not contacted Rex yet. I will determine if the timing is correct and go from there. I bought this DT400 non running and the points plate was missing so I figured I would fit a new ignition since parts were missing.
I've not determined if the new ignition is the problem. I am assuming something is not right with the kickback when trying to start the bike.

Question for YAMFAN. So what i described in post #9 that i 'cobbled together' is it basically a REX''s kit.
KT100 Kart motors had [or have] something similar but using a small rotor.
Actually thinking back at least 25 years i did the same thing with a DT125LC trail bike that i bought cheap for the kids [no spark]. Lighting coil screw had gone wandering then ripped the trigger & lighting but not the source. So did exactly the same as my 360. Was about 25 years ago that was. So nothing changes here lol. Same S$%t different day.
I do recall strobing the 360 at turn over speed to be sure it wasn't going to hemorrhage at the first kick. Then again when running & must've been happy with it. Was a long time ago.

I would be very cautious about not contacting them, as if there is an issue with the ignition, they might suggest it has been caused by you, which will void the warranty.

There is not really any simple way of checking the firing point without the motor running and using a strobe.

I use these systems: www.ohtokc.com/products/electronic-ignition-yamaha-ty175-hit

They were able to custom make a dual spark system, which improves the running of the TY175 quite a lot, and didn't cost much more than the stock one shown on that link.

Does your stator sourcy thing have two wire? & can you reverse them. Only ask because we had a TT250 source wound back to front [so the rewinder man said] & told us to swap the wires over & problem solved.
Was 1980 & In that case it was a red & a brown, one from each end of the coil.
If yours is earthed to the mount screw & using one wire out then options just ran out.
Or can you flip it over end for end.
Hell don't do anything i say please or not without talking to Rex's.
I'm just woffling about things from my past--& still happening at times.
Let us all know how it strobes at kick speed.
