Umm, gosh. If i said somewhere spin it with a drill i meant with a socket on a 3/8 drive short extension with the head cut off to fit in the drill. Nut needs to be tight enough as is turning the undo way. Be easy to have the nut tight enough if you have a proper puller.
It's how i do it if need be.

Not sure if a 400 has an extra plug blank off in the head but if so you could leave that & the plug out to let more "whoosh" out easily to help spin it. I did that on my 360.

Be extremely careful over - tightening the flywheel nut. Ask me how I know? They strip and I have heard of them snapping off.

None of this turning the motor is a good idea. I would guess Rex looks at this forum, and could use what is outlined on here, as a reason to refuse a warranty claim? Best thing to do is to try and borrow a working points backplate from a forum member, fit that and see if the bike runs.

YamFan, how could turning over the engine with a drill to strobe when the spark is happening be a bad idea or void a warranty?  Or are you referring to something else that was suggested?

I have received an email back from RSS. They stated that it's highly unlikely that the timing would be off, other than on a modified (race) application. Then they would suggest slotting the stator plate.

I don't want to pre blame RSS until i strobe timing. Everything fits and plugged into my harness nicely and there is a nice spark. Very easy install.

I must remind that I just got the DT and have never had it running. The PO just said it did not have spark and I found that when I brought it home. The stator plate was not present for some reason. The Yamaha CDI, flywheel and all other electrical was on the bike.

Should the ignition be good, if you have never had the bike running, check the reed petals are ok. If they are ok, take off the intake boot and squirt some brake cleaner into the intake, then try starting.

I just took some time and went to my shop.

It strobes dead on 2.9 btdc so REX is all good. I thought that it would be ok, the RSS parts are very nicely done.

Yamfan-I will check those items when I get a chance.

Thanks for everyones input so far.
I have mounted new tires, recovered the seat and currently have the forks apart for seals.
