Correct- 76 Dt 400 triple tree and 78 DT 400 Forks- The extra length of these forks make for a perfect balance and travel for the 13 1/2 inch rear shocks.

No other upgrades with front fork springs etc... all factory - I do like a little stiffer front end so I use just good old 10w40 in the forks.

Been anxious to take a peak inside the Oil Tank to see further what is happening and to confirm my suspicion on why the oil pump and engine did not get any oil on my last ride in Beaver, UT....

Yep- there's the problem. There is a fine mesh brass screen over the bottom port/gravity feed and it is completely block up with a fine grit and thick crap!

I flushed this oil tank on my last refresh on this bike so this build up occurred over the past 20 months or so... Thank God the RT1's are built so well it withstood a major hard day of riding with no oil causing very minimal results/damage.

So the Mod I will be performing on this will be to remove the screen entirely and placing a In-Line Visu oil Filter- Problem solved and piece of mind of future failure!

That is a great idea, Greg. My problem on my DT400 in Utah was at least in part due to a plugged screen in my oil tank. I think going with an external, replaceable filter makes a lot of sense. Plus you can see if the oil is flowing. If not doing that, I think that a reverse flush out of the oil tank an at least a seasonal basis is probably a good idea.

For sure- guess I am really surprised there have not been more issues out there with this set up. At least the 70 & 71 RT1/DT1 had a removable bolt that could be easily taken out and cleaned but with the 73 RT3 tank they went with the inside screen.

This filter will handle a lot of debri and as you say can see the flow of oil and debri it is catching. Brother Deet has proven this filter on his bike so comes with some great history!

I am pretty sure the DT400 (75-76) likely has the same screen setup and may as well benefit from this upgrade. I will be looking at that before I take the big boys back out to play!

Has been great to really take my time and be able to inspect and touch every part of this bike as I continue to make progress on the Black Widow.

I finished up cleaning / prepping the cases and now ready to put the bearings in the Freezer for a couple of days and then heat up the cases and drop them in- Going to be NICE to be flying on new Bearings!

Tomorrow will get the Front Fender install and work on cleaning up the Rear Wheel to get that on the bike and going to tear down the Front Forks and install some fresh/new seals. It will be a rolling chassis soon!

Should have the Crank back mid next week and will start putting the engine back together.

Hey GF looks great, probably will be better than new. :)
Whats your plan putting the crank into the brgs. Freezing the crank and heating the case with the brg worked well for me, crank dropped right in, on the flywheel side. I have a crank installing tool but didn't have to use. Actually I didnt heat the whole case, propane torch until the brg sizzled with a wet finger. Old trick doing trans-axles.
Thanks Mark

Thanks- Well since I already have the "Deet" Crank Puller kit... I am going to just pull it thru.

I do like the heating of the inner race idea for sure and from the video's I have seen- the crank does just drop right in.
