Correct main for CT3 is 230.
Wont make a difference to idle as you'll be on the pilot circuit, but would be potentially lean at higher throttle position.
I'd be replacing it with a genuine Mikuni 230 main, the non Mikuni ones will be hit and miss on actual sizing.
As Rt325 also asked, is the idle screw missing?
Can't expect the cable to reliably hold throttle slide in the same place for idle.

Good, idle screw is the one with the spring.
Warm the bike up then use the Idle screw to set the idle.
I twist the throttle as I adjust the screw until I get it set.
There's probably a proper procedure in the manual which give cable play for throttle and oil pump.

i have tried to set it up this way but even with the idle screw all the way in it wont keep running , the smaller air screw to the right of it is set at one complete rotation out . as i feel it dying if i open the throttle to try rescue it it still stops ? i can hold it at around 2000 rpm and it is fine but anything lower and it isnt happy. when i rode it out last week it was ticking over okay out in traffic etc so the problem seems intermittent maybe ?

That's odd as the idle screw should be holding the slide up in the same position that you are achieving using the cable.
With the engine off open the throttle and see if the idle screw will screw in more, it may be bottoming on the angle on the throttle slide.
Have you had the carb completely apart to clean everything?
Maybe remove the idle screw completely to see if it's intact.

Is it 'so' lean' at idle & at low revs, that it just doesn't want to run. so screwing the idle speed screw right up isn't lifting the slide as high as tightening the cable is doing. That doesn't sound right now i've said it--as the slide would be 'Way' up as screw lifts it quite a way looking through a carb when off the bike.

I guess i could apply the same theory if it was too rich also. Need to hear an audio, video of what its doing.

Couple things...  early on you said you used "aftermarket jets"... also some jet out of another carb?  Both are red flags.

I also suspect something in pilot circuit is completely off...  probably have to lift throttle slide to past where pilot circuit is not in play to get it to run.

Could be jet or carb is simply not clean.  Can you post close up pics of jets and inside of carb?
