My parents told me I'd die on a motorcycle, and then I crashed one when I was 12. Color me jealous lol. I wish I got a sweet Yamaha when I was a kid.

Pics pics pics! You can join me in trying to make your Yamaha run properly 40 years later!

Welcome. I like Rocky Mountain ATV/MC as their parts diagrams are easier to navigate. You can also use any sites parts diagrams as a reference to what parts go where. If you look at a part number for a bolt it will identify the size. For example, 1M1-06015-00 is a 6mmx15mm bolt. If OEM bolts and screws are important, you can fi d them at ACE Hardware or a home improvement store that sells metric sizes. Post some pictures, it makes your story more interesting. I have a 75 DT250 and a 78 DT400. My first bike was a 72 DT125.

Not quite correct on the part number diagnosis!

You are correct if the part number is in two blocks of five (99999-99999) and here the dimensions are in the second block.

Where the part number is made up of three digits, then five, then two and then another two, then the block of five refers to a specific part type and is the same for whichever model it is. The initial block of three refers to the model that the part was first used on, the second to last block of two will indicate any revisions (or sometimes country variations) and the final block of two is usually colour (though might be type of finish as well, not certain here).

The first few pages of any Yamaha parts manual can be quite informative - any parts book, those pages are pretty generic.

Hello! My name is Emily I am from MA and am a (fairly) new 1974 DT175 owner. While this is not my first vintage bike it is my most favorite, just don't tell the other ones! I stumbled upon this page looking for a little help and guidance on some mechanical issues I am having and was told that this was the best place to go. Look forward to wracking your super knowledgeable brains! And thank you for the warm welcome!

Welcome! from the UK Emily.

Fire away with your questions and don't forget to look up the manuals in the Tech Library (see top toolbar).

Hi everyone!

My name is Etienne and I'm a new 1977 DT250D owner from Canada. I bought the bike in Nova Scotia a couple weeks ago, it was a short road trip and a long drive quite worth it. I always wanted a street legal two stroke that lets me experience the real freedom of a motorcycle. I will be registering the bike as an antique because it costs much less yearly even though it restricts it to 70km/h roads(I have a FZ1 for street riding). I plan to drive it around town and on the trails.

Everything on the bike is working as it should, or at least seems to, and the previous owner did some welcome aesthetic touch ups on the bike, like frame and exhaust paint. He drained and refilled the front forks, got the brakes working right, installed new fuel lines and filter, changed the handlebar, even the tires are recent and in good shape. The bike starts first kick and got low mileage 5200kms(3230 miles), assuming it is the original speedometer assembly, so it makes me believe that I would find the original piston in there :D.

I found this website a couple days before buying the DT and it's played a big role in my decision. I'd like to thank the creators, admins, supporters and everyone who's involved in this amazing resource!

I had a 2stroke blow up and seize at 50-55mph in the past and it's not an experience I'm willing to reproduce haha! There are many maintenances I want to do on the bike to make sure it is as reliable as it can be and was back in the day before bringing it on adventures, hence the many questions I have. I guess I should post them in the "1977 & forward bike" section?

I'm looking forward to using this forum, learning thanks to your knowledge and experiences, and helping as much as I can. I'm glad to have the chance to become part of this great community!

Do you have the paint code for the bike. I can't find the sticker anywhere on mine and it's the same colour.

Okay, I knew the 5 would refer to the part type. I have been buying bolts for the DT400 resto based on that 5 digit formula I referred to and it seems to be working so far. But it has been 40 years since I worked in a dealership.
