thanks guys! once I tried a few things,it was easy to make a clean installation.
I got to some other things I needed to do today. first trimming the ignition wire since I got the coil where I wanted it.
here is a before picture.

I took a little excess off.

I wanted to put the chain guards back on. the rubber mounts on the big sheet metal one were too rotted to use. I had some extra ones from a MotoDad 24 kit for a DT1/RT1. I wondered if they would work.

they seem to fit very well!

I also put on a chain I had lying around and it fits. won't be long before this thing will move under it's own power.

in September,it is getting a wiring harness,a Uni foam 63 mm pod filter, tach cable,LH switch, new gauge face decals for the instruments and so on. put a front wheel on it and the other parts I got coming and I can take it for a ride and taste a little fruit of my labor on this bike. exciting time ahead!
that flat topped stock rear tire would likely have little traction. a better set of rims and Dunlop D606 tires will set it up well. I plan to put Progressive rear shocks out back and I still need to rebuild the front forks and locate that Trickit fork kit and install it. I got the Trick it kit somewhere,I need to find it.

thanks Devin! it is the tank off the other DT400 that is in dire need of a top end job. it's great having 2 of them. the old bike gets used for reference and occasional temporary parts use.
once I get this one all done,my attention will turn to the other one.
I will need to send the top end for it off to Enduronut for a rebore and piston. I might talk to meis about a stage 1 porting and a sleeper pipe and do some fine tuning to it. I plan to trick that one out some too.

What type of tires are going to run. I ride mostly on the street so I got a set of IRC 80/20. Where are you going to run your bike mostly. I like the 80/20 because I can really corner well on the pavement compared to the stock flat tops, yet they still look dirt. I have not tried them in the dirt.

on the Super DT400,it will get Dunlop D606 street legal knobbies on it. the other 1975 DT400 will get the best replacements for the stock Bridgestone trail wing tires.

I could not resist taking it for a quickie ride through the yard. I went ahead and put on the pipe, shifter lever and the front wheel off the other DT400. the engine got hot this time but not too hot and it ran super strong. in fact if you kept below 3500 RPM and 1/4 to 1/3 throttle, you can never tell it has a MX400B top end on it with a 38MM Mikuni on it.
due to the bare bones nature of it,the bike was nimble and very quick. now I am really stoked about getting this thing together.
I did bump the ignition timing on it a little and I wish I had the Go Pro with me. it seemed more eager to rev further and even a little quicker throttle response. it actually startled me when it screamed to life! the exhaust note also noticeably changed.
clutch worked great and the transmission was snickity snick through the gears but I did not get past 2nd gear. that crappy rear tire even hooked up better than I thought. it was full of surprise indeed!
