this bike saw some extreme cornering or it was laid down hard on pavement on the RH side, how could I tell? witness the stud being ground down.
this is what a normal stud should look like.

here is the RH side.

at last the frame is done. lots of scrubbing and sanding here.

thanks Frank! I got some updates coming up. it is starting to look like a Motorcycle again. might even take it on it's maiden voyage next month.
of course I have to borrow some parts from the other DT400 as I found some things wrong with both original wheels to the bike and other little things.

first order of business was reinstalling the swing arm, some other bits and the engine and mount the parts for the new ignition system.
This image is hidden for guests.
I installed the forks, triple tree and headlight parts I am going to use on this bike. these parts later will be removed and repainted.

my first attempt to mount the ignition coil. this would not work because it would not clear the gas tank.
I made up a little bracket and tried it this way. it made this area too wide to put on the fuel tank.

this is what I ended up doing. I drilled a hole for a 5 mm bolt and got some washers to space the coil out to get past the little hook on the end and mounted the coil on the rectifier bracket and mounted the voltage regulator on the old coil bracket, now the fuel tank will go on with no trouble.

trial fitting the fuel tank and I went ahead and put the oil tank on and the seat to be used. these parts too is going to get refurbished.
paint the seat pan then a new foam and cover for it. some bodywork and a fresh coat of competition yellow paint and graphics for both tanks and so on.

Looks good BigDog! Glad to see you getting it back up and running! I have DT400 ready for restoration, just waiting on time to do it!!
one question though....Is that gold paint on the tanks? makes you wonder what people were thinking back in the day

yeah,it is gold paint and it has red paint under the gold paint on the fuel tank. the paint directly under the gold paint on the oil tank is competition yellow.
one of the prior owners tried painting the chrome on the rims with black paint. I don't think it was a horrible scheme but not for me. I like the factory look much better.
