I second that! You don't get a chance to save such memories, and when he gets to be our age, he will tear up thinking of how much fun he had out with Dad in the Shop (Or Grand Dad as the case may be . . .

Loving this stuff!

Update 9/22/15
Still chipping away at some small projects. Found the clutch push rod to be bent, Dad must have thrown a chain back in the day. Sprocket cover is a different shade of oxidized aluminum so I imagine it go smashed too! I cleaned everything up, installed a new push rod, seal and front sprocket. Rear cush-drive (sprocket mount) needed some attention. Broke 2 bolts off during removal. I found a bolt kit with lock tabs on Ebay. Drilled out broken bolts successfully and cleaned everything up. Mounted the oil tank, but I still need to track down pin stripe and stick on emblems. I just printed out some pictures of other oil tanks so I can position them properly. Anyone know a source for OEM pinstripe?
New push rod, seal, sprocket, pretty clean.
40+ generations of spider families.
Professional bolt removal.

Update 10/6/15
Some more very satisfying progress! Even though she's looking great I estimate I'm only about 60-70% there (although it will probably never be done-done, there is no such thing
). A few more big projects, seat, pipe, & rear fender, then sorting out the electrical. Followed by dozens of nickle dime projects. One thing I am doing that bugs me a little (and mentioned previously), is that I am painting various pieces of hardware that are too rusty to polish back to an acceptable state. Forum members have shared ideas for plating, and I will certainly get back to these painted pieces later on. One final cosmetic touch that I don't want to paint is the muffler guard. It's nice and straight, but rusty. This is too much of a cosmetic center piece to paint. I have found mint ones on Ebay but for big money. I'll cross that bridge at some point.
My Dad stopped in the other day and saw it for the first time. I was trying to keep it under wraps until I had the project to an impressive state. Needless to say I think he's still in shock. He knew I was working on it, but not to the degree I am taking it! Here's some new pics...

Update 11/5/15
I want to highlight the oil tank, because me and the tank have some special history. When the bike found its way back into our possession I did some semi-restoring with the budget and skills of a 12 year old. The oil tank was stoved in from a crash. Since we disconnected the auto-lube, I hacked a hole in the back of the tank and pounded out the dent. I then bought the closest orange color I could find in a spray can. As you will see from pics, not so close. Fortunately, I was able to save the original emblems and never lost them. When I finally got the pin striping figured out, emblems on and tank mounted it was an epic moment! Victory at last.
Here's the pin stripe I found. Pretty darn close to original/

One more note on pin stripe. I'm now second guessing the thick-thin stripes, because I've come across pics of other DT's where the lines are the same. I have several pics where the stripes are clearly not the same. I can re-do this down the road if it bugs me. Only me and the rest of you will know.
Anyone know for sure what the deal is?
Update 11/11/15
Some more detail work. Ordered from DEET, some finishing touches to the electrical system. I painted the rear fender and installed. The paint I used was what I came across through this site I believe. It's Dupli-color DE1615 spray can. It's tricky to use, follow the directions for 2 very light coats and a heavier third coat. This paint will not hide any imperfections, rather it amplifies them. I think it will look fine when it's all assembled and of course could be a candidate for another level of perfection someday.
Just a temporary assembly of the headlight and tank for the photo op.
