Since we brought the bike home, I have been evaluating what it really needed. I have sourced new wiring, cables, seat cover, and have most if the other hard parts in inventory. While surfing EBay. I found a really pristine 21" front wheel - an optional upgrade. Since I already had the matching 21" tire on hand, the cost of the upgrade was about the same as buying a new 19" tire! Got it cleaned and mounted today.

It won't go on the bike just yet - awaiting time for a build on it. When it does, the 19" will replace the 18" front on my AT1 sleeper.

Spend some more time in the Garage today - so the freshly mounted up 21" wheel was too tempting to just look at.

I rolled the 175 over to the jack and went ahead with the swap.

First, here is what you gain going from a 19" to a 21" wheel on this bike:

Obviously the one in the front is the 19" with the original Dunlop trial pattern tire on it. Time to pull out the old measuring stick:

Hard to get a good angle with the camera while holding the tires vertical and the yard stick, but it appears to be about a full 2" different with these tires. The aspect ratio of the Kenda's is very similar to the stock Dunlops.

I also decided to pull out an old Circle Industries fork brace that was extra inventory - seemed that this bike would be the right recipient of the extra stability.

It fit right on, pre-drilled to match up to the fork bosses. Even though this bike will get it's lights back with the electrical work, adding some more off-road capability seemed a no brainer.

Next up will be electrical and cables when I get some more time.

:Throttle

In case you were wondering why nothing appears to be really cleaned up - at this point I am simply getting the things fixed and bolted up to make sure it all works right. When the build time comes along, everything will come apart as there is rust everywhere, and it will need to have a full frame-up re-do. For now, I am going with the Mad Max look . . .

Mako that's a nice looking front wheel.... spokes are clean and wheel looks cherry.

21 inch puts the center of gravity back some and lightens the weight on the front wheel

makes handling in the dirt much improved....fun fun fun :likey

The wheel IS cherry! Totally straight, no rust, all spokes good, and included a nice brake backing plate with almost new shoes! It was only $65 including shipping to my doorstep! Such a deal.

It is off of a 1976 DT175 which is a straight up bolt on. I will be recycling the 19" onto my AT1 together with some really nice VEE Rubber trials pattern tires in the correct sizes for that bike. It should improve performance a bit more over the oversized ones on the bike now.
