Thanks for sharing that.  My wife said to just look at it as a game and your job is to just figure out your next move...pass go amd collect $200 or get out of jail.  Just have fun with it.  Perfect advice, because this is why I am doing this after all.

I'll update on how it goes....  thanks again.

My bosses DT1 of which i only have the ownership papers left from when i ended up with most of it after bits were stolen off it--was, Found this on the site here where we'd been talking numbers ages ago, as follows-- My ownership papers with engine & frame numbers from December "68 & are both DT1-20090.--I'll keep looking for them as must've been a few more numbers maybe--but maybe not. Had a candy gold tank, Can't recall if it had indicators. Definitely didn't have the tank brace underneath.

Thanks EN for the clarification on the sticker...  I'm confident DEET would not produce one if it didn't belong on the bike so my advice still stands...

And thanks for posting those brochures...  I knew they existed but couldn't find them.

One suggestion I have is taking a solid factual position...  not a "why I believe" stance.....  VIN number literature and Service Bulletins from Yamaha clearly identify not only the model, but distinct features unique to the 1968 that your bike should have.  Take pictures of those features and with the copies of the Yamaha literature you should be able to prove the year model.

Great advice and that is the strongest evidence of the bike's vintage.  I will post a copy of the documnent I prepared and welcome feedback. There is confusion when just using the VIN #s, but the bike features such as the dated service bulletin on the carburetor idle adj and the fuel tank stay are solid indicators of its age.   If the shop owner and mechanic puts their ego in the closet for a minute we should get past this.   I'm not trying to get an unsafe bike approved, rather I just want them to work with me to find out how we can get this bike back on the road again with the least amount of "brain damage".

There is another element that hasn't been discussed yet and touches on the honesty and integrity of the shop.  The whole inspection process is flawed in that there is an inherent conflict iof interests and incentive for the dealer to fail the bike as it then provides them with an opportunity for additional work to fix the problem.  Maybe even one they created as I do not get to be present during the inspection.  "Because of insurance reasons".   This is a small town and hence no option for me to go elsewhere without the cost of transportation.   My country is so socialistic it drives me crazy how government's have created regulations to kill a person's freedoms without in my opinion achieving meaningful increased safety to the public.   The irony is the vintage and classic bike industry could be a significant business for this shop if they approached it differently.

As a side note.  We currently have a mask law in Canada and everyone must wear them in public.  In this shop no one wears them.  They have signs up with the regulation indicating that I must wear a mask.  Some customers wear them and others don't.  In contrast, they expect me to follow bike transportation regs to a "T" so they are devoid of any liability; however, when it comes health matters and health liability to their customer they must see themselves as experts.   The hypocracy is that they treat me as if I am not qualified on bike inspection mechanical matters yet want the freedom to not follow health experts advice on masking.

I feel my country is becoming the Venezuela of the North.  Regardless, I will get past this as I am determined despite time and cost.

Ya, it is very tempting to turn this into a debate, but problem is I have the cards stack against me.   If we could have open, honest and respectful two way discussions we'd would be much better off and maybe more fair.   I have to be careful I guess as I might be making this a bigger problem than is needed as maybe it is just the shop and I might have better response elsewhere.  In any event thanks for this forum and friendlies that I can vent a bit....

Attached is some information that I plan to use to help me get my DT1 passed an inspection and registered for the road.  A big thanks to everyone who helped with this and in particular MarkT, EN and MdScott for helping with specific material I used in this doc.   I hope this does it as far as the issue of it being a 68 model and not having a requirement for turn signals as per the inspection requirements in my Province.

cheers....

Correction to my document on proof of year for DT1....the inspection requirements for signal lamps should read " only applies to motorcycles manufactured after January 1, 1971..."
