Mark, or anyone else can you tell me if a points ignition from a 1977 DT250 WOULD WORK on that bike ??????
The previous owner told me something to the effect that the flywheel did not fit from the 77 DT250

Yes, if you truly have the 77 stator and flywheel.
It's the 73 and earlier flywheel that is too big on the OD to fit the later models... some have done machining to make it work.

Thanks Mark I have not looked at the flywheel to see if in fact it is from a 77 DT250
It is in a box at the time I bought the bike

I am curious how those fork chrome inner tubes appear to be in such good shape while the rest of the bike is understandably very rusty. Is it just the photos that make them look to be in such good shape?

Huh. When I did this to my DT360A I thought I was told it had to be a stator and flywheel from a 75 or 76 DT250.

Any of the DT250, from 1974-1978 will work as long as you have the matching flywheel.
IF it isn't one thing, it's another.

Congratulations, it looks like a really nice project. A friend of mine back in high school had a 74 360, he challenged me to ride a wheelie in front of the high school, the principal wasn't too happy with me but for some reason he liked me so I didn't get suspended... Good times

74-76 points are the "best match" because of the wiring... but 77-78 fits and works too. Need to run a regulator and might need to change the battery charge wiring slightly.

This bike was mine, but I don't have the skills needed to getting back to original or better condition.
A few things of note:
The forks look good because the fork seals are probably shot and the fork fluid protected the forks.
I was told or learned after I bought the 77 DT-250 points ignition that it wouldn't work. I don't remember if I tried to fit the flywheel or not. But I'm thinking I tried and it didn't fit.
The MX pegs were on the bike when I bought it in 1983. Turn signals and chain guards, not so.
I am excited for John to have this motorcycle and a bit jealous of his skills to bring it back.
In the meantime, I've believe that the 2018 XJR700 is the same color as my first motorcycle, 1974 GT-80. Can someone confirm?
Thanks,
Joel

When installing a 76-78 stator in an early bike, you need the 77-78 flywheel too.
IF it isn't one thing, it's another.
