1974 DT 250 was created by Jagarrett369

I have recently been working on a 74 DT 250 that at one point had all wiring stripped except for the kill switch. I have received many new parts and wiring from DEET who has been a great help I might add. I am having trouble with the rear flashers. Grounded on the flasher itself with new bulbs, nothing. The front flashers work however the indicator in the gauge works with neither the front or rear. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

The flasher circuit is a "tuned" circuit. By that I mean the resistance of the flasher bulbs and the resistance of the flasher indicator bulb need to be correct and all in the circuit in order for the flasher relay to cycle ON/OFF at the correct rate, the indicator to flash and only one side flash at a time.

All that to basically say that the bulbs in the circuit must be correct and connected for it to work properly.

If you've verified that, then you may want to assure that you actually have FUNCTIONAL ground connections at the rear flashers. Testing with a test light or volt meter from battery + to the ground wire is a good way to verify.

Also, the sockets for the bulbs tend to suffer from oxidation. This can cause a poor connection to the lamp.

+1

Whenever an old indicator comes into my possession I test it manually on the workbench by connecting it direct to a battery (for this purpose the wattage of the bulb doesn't matter and just make sure the voltage of the battery and the bulbs are the same). If the bulb lights up, then it's good to go.

For the rear indicators on your bike you will need an earth cord for each side. By that I mean a wire with a ring connector at one end attached to the indicator stud and a male bullet connector at the other, which connects to a 4 hole female connector from the main loom/harness. Unlike the front indicators, the rears are rubber mounted and so don't pick up an earth direct from the frame. I have attached a couple of photos of my own bike (dust, cobwebs an' all!!) to show what I mean.

Good luck with getting it sorted!

Thank you both. I verified and finally figured it out. Now I have everything thing flashing and working except the left signal is dim and only putting out around 2.3 volts right is bright and putting out around 5. I am hoping it’s a weak battery at this point...

Good. Your getting it sorted out.

A weak battery would show as low voltage on both sides. Since it is one side only I'd look for a connection that is not clean and tight. The oxidation that can form on the bullet connectors from exposure and time can be trouble makers.

Contacts in switch? I like Caig Deoxit. Spray a little on the contacts and cycle the switch. Cleans and protects the contacts. Or disassemble and clean if hasn't already been done.

Try reversing the left / right connections . If the weakness shifts sides ,
that would point to your flasher having dirty contacts .

Whew! Ok figured out what’s happening but not a fix. When I connect the tachometer cable to the tach it dims it on the left side while flashing.... thoughts?
