Update 11/20/15 Cleaned up and reassembled tail light. I scored this tail light back in the day from a bike headed to the salvage yard. I learned that there are 2 different rubber mounting arrangements for DT's of this vintage. I had to find new hardware and rubber which wasn't too bad. I also found a beautiful reproduction speedo cable on Ebay and I put a picture of the packaging below. Ebay listing does not list my bike (1972 DT2), but it is absolutely the right cable. I am missing the snap ring however, I will track it down. Also bought a new horn. Hooked up a battery from my kids 6V powerwheels and we have functional tail light, brake light, and horn!
Left is speedo cable package, right tail light rubber mount. Both nice reproduction parts.

If you don't want to wait for an OEM cable retainer, there is a cheap and easy aftermarket solution to the lost cable clip:
yamaha-enduros.com/index.php/forums/main...r-cable-retainer#161
I am still running that solution in one of my bikes without issue.

IF it isn't one thing, it's another.

Update 12/23/15
Nothing epic to report, just baby steps. I received some more electric goodies from DEET. Indicator lamp sockets, front brake switch wires, loom, and a handful of connectors. I assembled the headlight, hopefully for the last time until I add directionals some day. I used a new light from Pobits, and a new bezel (appears to be OEM, but may be a knock off on Ebay). It's a battle to get the light in the bezel, and the bezel on the bucket. I did finaly get it, but I was doubtful for a while. The finished assembly looks slightly different than original pictures of the bike. Anyone have thoughts on that?
I spent some time on the seat, brazed some cracks in the pan and painted. I tried to use window screen spline as edging for the pan, but that didn't work out. I have since bought some edging from McMaster Carr which installed nicely and was only about $7. I can provide a part number if someone needs it. I made a brief attempt to install the seat cover, but decided to wait until I had more time and patience at my disposal.
I decided to not use the new horn I bought because I found a nice OEM unit. Put it on and now have functioning tail light, brake light and horn!
Merry Christmas!

Update 1/18/16
Snowmobiles usually take up every free second of my Wintertime, but with minimal snowfall this year I put some more time into the DT. Primarily just more work on the seat. As mentioned previously I used edging from McMaster Carr, here's the details: p/n 8507K61 "Rubber Edge Trim 1/32" Inside Width, 1/8" Inside Height" 72 cents per foot. It went on nicely without any glue, hopefully after installing the cover it will all look good. I decided to have my upholstery connection put the cover on.
Another fitment check
The edging
I need to insert an interesting side story to my restoration project. During one of my Ebay searches, I recently stumbled across an auction for an identical DT to ours, and it was close by. Further, the bike had a "Boston Cycles" sticker on the oil tank. This is the same dealership our bike came from. The bike was possibly a neighbor to mine on the boat ride over as well as the showroom floor. As fate would have it, I stopped in to see it just before the auction ended. The bike was 100% original, with the exception of tires (maybe), and ran nicely. This thing was so original, I'm not sure I would have done anything except clean it up. To someone looking for an original bike to make flawless, this one was priceless. In the heat of the moment I put a ridiculous bid on it, but with just seconds left I was outbid. This was probably the best outcome as I don't need another old bike right now, but it was awesome to see one in it's 100% original state.

Got the seat back from my upholstery buddy (Inside Out Customs, Lunenburg , MA). I'm very happy, this was a MAJOR step. Except for the picture of my Dad and I when I was an infant, I never had a good seat for this bike!!! Here's how she looks now! Many loose ends to tie up, but we will be riding when the snow melts!!!!!!!!!!

Update: 3/11/16
The end is near! The project start date was April 15th, so that is now my target completion date. Of course there will always be things to tidy up, but I want it to be fully operational by then. I decided to send out a bunch of parts for plating since so much of this project is coming out better than I expected. I finally cleaned up and painted the exhaust. The original exhaust mount brackets and hardware need to be located or repaired. The zip ties I had been using back in the day will no longer cut it. I also buttoned up many minor loose ends including rear brake light switch, installed the battery, fixed buggered up swing arm pivot threads and nut.
Parts for plating!
Needing the battery is a good sign!
A little more paint touch up!
