This bike is supposed to be a warming up to retirement project, for trail riding and a 'budget' machine. It's more important that it rolls along than it looks pretty. However I blew some good money on a bit of paint but didn't do the prep well at all and didnt use any base coat. (If others are doing paint, definitely need to clean very well and perhaps use some diluted sulphuric and then a good HT base coat to get good results. Perhaps I should call him the Golden Fox now !

Got everything back in and running at a standstill. I noticed that you could move the top end a little side to side, but not being experienced enough recently I wouldnt know where that limit is ( I guess that is normal wear for whatever kms this bike has actually done) and the piston pin was smooth in the top end roller / needle bearings (and may have needed to be a little tighter but again would be normal for a used engine), nothing felt like it was a harbinger of doom and the piston at TDC had very very little wiggle room, so Im going to see how long it runs with the current rings in place or starts to make strange sounds calling for help

My Fluke told me that the rear bulb was blown on both filaments so as well as the front I'm having to change the rear also and then will need to check that as well as the brake lamp setup.
Hopefully back up and riding in a couple of days

Front and rear lights work as does brake light, finally. Indicators dont flash so I suppose that means the old flasher unit may be duff. The engine sometimes makes 'sounds' that I'm not that comfortable with on hard deceleration that goes away on acceleration (again piston slap, running lean, chain slap, I really don't know). Otherwise goes like a dream, just those occasional engine sounds that I dont like too much.

Ok, so the indicators don't flash, but I still have a duff sulphated battery that Im using as it has its role to play. I checked the 2pin flasher relay with a 6v charger and got the click click click so it may just be the old battery and a case of having to rev more. Another little issue to get solved.

Bad battery likely contributed to blown bulbs.

(Not as "quick" as an earlier model without voltage regulator but can still happen.  Make sure regulator connections are good...  including the grounding of the regulator case)

Cheers Mark, I think the ground needs to be checked and what I need to do is replace that battery as you say.

I ran around looking for any grounds and checked the battery ground connections, but haven't tested indicators again yet. I wrestled with 2 tires as the old ones were about to throw me in the ditch. Then I had quite a fight to get the rear on the bread, it took a bit of soapy water and more air. Then when I had got the front done something felt not right. I noticed that part #13 (kind of large washer / bearing cover) on the parts diagram was loose, took the wheel off again and realised it had separated from part #12 (spacer) so I pressed them together in the vice and got them all straight and set and then put it all back together. I also noticed that the PO had put the axle nut on the wrong side so I put it back on the brake side and noticed that the castle nut is damaged. It's ok for now but I think I will look for a replacement. Cold, tired, dirty hands, now running in for a hot cuppa!

Does some informed individual know wether the castle nut part number 90171 12005 (oem number) is the same as a more modern part 90171 10004 (more readily available) ? Cheers.
