Hello

Yes that unit was fully tested, every CDi unit is before we send it so we are confident it is good.

We often see this - old generator windings not being able to fire a brand now CDi unit. Even NOS winding give problems, so its not correct to say the stator is good if NOS windings have been fitted.

Remember Yamaha told dealers to keep parts they removed as faulty when the bike was new and under warranty. This stock would have been put in to store and 40 years later is on sale on ebay as NOS!

Are you buying this? I'm not! I will video my results tomorrow, the engine will turn 10,000 rpm with strong spark with the old cdi box installed.

I got the additional cdi box from Rex's and it does not work at all either.

Seems like par for the course. Always your fault.

I've had and worked on many later 175 CDI's the past few years... I've never come across a bad CDI box. A couple of bad stators but those were all on the smaller off-road only MX175 ignition which uses a slightly smaller flywheel.

I've seen and tried to fix 175 CDI stators with aftermarket parts (source and pulser coils)... none have ever worked even though ohm readings were within spec.

Really happy that you found NOS parts and got yours to work!!!

I only replaced the 2 source coils and the lighting/charging coil assembly and it all works. the bike has a good strong spark on the original cdi box. I will video all this tomorrow God willing.

the only thing that is original on the stator is the pulser coil, I can replace that and there is nos replacements available. I wonder is Enduronut can come and weigh in on this as He was a former Yamaha tech himself. I suspect Rex's statement about Yamaha putting removed warranty repair components back in to the parts bin is false but Enduronut can shed light on this if he is willing.

Nothing against Deet at all but I rebuilt the stator and it works well with the stock cdi box. it is the Rex cdi boxes that don't work with the rebuilt stator.

The NOS source coils and lighting coil were not all that expensive either, they all were below 70 dollars each with the lighting coil being cheaper than the other two.

The lighting coil needed to be replaced due to a shorted voltage regulator.

The only reason I went with the Rex cdi box was it has a modern more performance oriented ignition curve.

it turned out to be a sacrifice but I can get another stator then send it and a cdi box to Rex's and have them restore the spark. unless Deet knows what is required and saving him a headache, my best option would be having Rex do it.

I'm sure the reference to "DEET saves you dollars" wasn't a dig on you fixing your own stator.... I think we're all impressed by that! I know I am!

:OnFire :OnFire :OnFire

I took Asco's comment as DEET advocating using caution when buying from Rex's... some people are very happy with Rex's products but the ones that have issues often report the "it's your fault" deflection or just no warranty support at all.

Blaming it on "NOS parts were bad warranty parts the dealer kept on the shelf" is a new twist on "it's your fault" that I hadn't seen before....

Thanks Mark, Rex's is a bit arrogant aren't they? I like their 12 volt conversions as I have one on my DT175, it was easy to install and it works great.

The scary part was both old source coils showed resistance in spec, I determined it was the only thing holding things back by turning the magneto at a faster speed and watch the spark break up.

It sure seems that way. I have mixed feelings about Rex's. It's AWESOME that they make parts for these old bikes! On the other hand I'm not thrilled with some of the quality/support issues I've seen.
