Just picked up a new to me DT400 project, will try to remember to post updates. For a little background I've got a 1981 XS1100 Midnight Special, a 1992 TDM850, a 2020 R3, and two 1981 Honda Silverwings. Only the R3 was bought in running condition...

Welcome from NZ downunder.
Looks like you have a good one to restore--good model although i come from an era of older models.
Good strong motor & transmission your one.
Talking XS11 midnight special a workmate of mine in the local Yamaha shop bought one brand new & it developed a creaking noise in the rear hub within how the spline center is part of the mag wheel. Just sort of groaned wheeling it along slowly.
Never did sort 'that' but did many trouble free miles on it.
I guess--without looking--that they had some rubbery cush system compressed within.
Great model. Sorry, that was a story goin nowhere haha. Enjoy your time here.
Just looked on cmsl out of curiosity & now i'm confused.
Maybe there's non replaceable bonded rubber-steel inserts creaking groaning withing the rubber where the bolts hold the driving spline on.
Was only 40 something years ago--& doesn't matter anymore. Just reminiscing about the good times at work.

I bought a first model TDM850 back in May 1991. A lovely ride, but downpipes rotted away quickly and lack of a centre stand was a pain in the arse.

Welcome from Japan. Wow some great rides there. LIke Uncleal I remember well the TDM's, good commuter machines and looked smart at it too. Those Yam XS are fabulous easy riding bikes, never owned one though.

This is the model TDM I had.
Many journeys with my cricket kit bag on the pillion seat and funny protuberance behind that!

Here's my TDM850, a few minor upgrades including brakes off of a YZF600: photos.app.goo.gl/K216rGmSWyshWjYn9
Here's my XS1100, all stock: photos.app.goo.gl/7Ha4DQNGjMQotekQ7
My R3, bought new because I just really liked it: photos.app.goo.gl/qNusxPLdRuv8AfSG7
And one of my Silverwings, the other is just a parts bike (except it runs and rides too...): photos.app.goo.gl/Ck88s6455LRDvY496

I've taken off the head and it was a small miracle that every nut came off, all 6 studs are in good enough condition so I'll just need replacement nuts and washers. The piston is frozen and the cylinder walls are rusty but not pitted at a first glance. Once I get it freed I'll be pulling the jug to have it punched over for a new piston and rings.
Oil injection pump still works and the oil tank isn't rusted out so that's a win. Still undecided on if I'll delete that and just run mix in the tank so I'm sure it's right. Tank is also clean and the cap screws on and off smoothly.
Carb is clean in the bowl, float, needle and seat regions but the slide is currently stuck.
Front and rear brakes corroded in place, unfortunately cracked some of the lips on the hubs prying them apart. The rims and spokes are in decent enough condition for now.
I've done some surfing of the various areas of the forum, if anyone knows of common DT400 issues or things to look for let me know, always willing to probe the hive mind

Check out his thread starting at post #11 and you will see something I discovered in my DT400B that was causing poor running issues. It was like a new bike after replacing those few carb parts. You shouldn’t need to replace the slide. Mine was badly scored. It was the needle, main nozzle, and the needle valve assembly that did the trick.
