V70 Starter Stator Generator was created by WrldTrvlr
Hello Everyone,I hope I’m not overstepping here. I recently found a “barn find” V70 for $150 with under 400 miles on it! Unfortunately, it looks like some kids got hold of it, rode it hard in the yard, lost the key, and left it to sit idle. From what I’ve gathered, this model was only sold in the US for one year and isn’t exactly classified as a moped because it can be shifted. Now, onto the issue: the kick start shaft is broken, so I’ve been relying on the electric start. Initially, the starter was able to rotate the engine. While troubleshooting (cleaning the carb and fixing the spark plug boot), I got it to start, though it idled high due to the carb slide not seating properly. After that, the starter stopped working completely, and now I only get a clicking sound. I cleaned the commutator following a YouTube guide, and I’ve confirmed the green wire gets 12V when the starter button is pressed. The ground seems fine, but I’m not sure what to try next. I could be overlooking something simple!Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Greetings from NZ. Brushes are my first thought. Are all 4 under tension on the comutator?. Battery good to soak up the charge. Put a DC volt meter across the battery & you'll see it rise after idle to higher than bat voltage maybe 14+. If it is working you'll hear the motor work harder as it cuts in just up from idle. Same system as just about everything used back then. I had a V90 but our ones had 12volt ac magneto & charging, no electric start. Were hard on kick shafts too. Far too small shaft size for a 90 & a high geared kick speed so turned it fast. Consequently people would give a big kick & whamo broken shaft. I worked there so did a few. Push start easy if ya roll along in neutral paddling sitting on & pop into first. We had V50 & V90 think we missed the 70 but same horse. Later-much later-became V50 & V80 here with auto clutch on the trans mainshaft instead of the crank. All great models. Your & my model had prettymuch a crash box with no clutch release between shifts. So trick was to short shift to second just after take off as had a big ratio jump ist to 2nd then second to top didn't hurt so much as a closer ratio step, or maybe just speed helped it. Was 50 years+ ago haha.

If you haven't already, charge/test the battery and/or measure the voltage at the battery when you engage the starter. Battery can have enough charge to seem fine but voltage tanks when the load of starter is engaged.
