Can you post a picture of where/how you have it mounted?  I bought one for my DT400 but can't decide how to mount it.  Thanks!

A little trick I used during high engine temperature events was to depress the choke/enricher lever on the carb.
It basically throws raw gas into the cylinder which would TEMPORARILY cool the piston/cylinder. Of course, it ran poorly being that rich.
So any attempt at running cooler by changing the mixture or timing will have a trade-off in reduced performance.
The engine was designed to air-cool itself under certain parameter/conditions.
If you want to exceed those conditions but maintain high performance, other non-mixture/timing methods may be helpful.

Some ideas:
  • a larger fin area. Increasing fin area (Webco head) could help.
  • Fin extensions
  • Mechanical cooling (external fan- like what is used on a radiator)
  • Heat shielding for exhaust
Something else that may make a difference (I don't know if it would be good or bad) is the type of fuel used.
Octane?
% of ethanol?

Just some thoughts... I'm not an expert on anything, just my opinions...

I also use the Trail Tech.
The temperature sensor looks like a washer with a wire attached and mounts to whatever will fit through the hole (head bolt, spark plug, screw)
Mine also includes an input for speed and rpm.
