1R6 wiring problems was created by Rimotu66
Hi all
does anyone have a picture of the wiring inside the headlight especially the 9 wires into 2 multi blocks from the ignition switch and the 'jump' lead from the right hand switch gear to the main loom? I cannot find a wiring diagram for a 9 wire ignition switch??
my UK/Euro DT400D mx wiring loom does not match the wiring diagram I have in my Haynes manual or my Gen 400D service manual.

Is there obvious evidence that parts of the main harness and/or switchgear have been tampered with?
At the back of the Yamaha Service Manual should be a cable and wiring routing diagram, and this should show which wires actually terminate in the headlight bowl.
If you have a UK/Euro parts manual, put the part numbers of the switches into the search field on the CMSNL website and, if you are lucky, there might be pictures of the actual parts that fit your bike.
There are various combinations of butchered wiring and fitment of incorrect parts out there (repro parts advertised as fitting models that, in fact, they don't). However, bear in mind that the colour of the wiring for each part, regardless of model, was the same across the Yamaha range. The only exception to this is that the positive lead for indicators is often black, instead of dark brown/chocolate (left) and dark green (right).

If you can't find a diagram, asking a specific question about whatever your problem is might get you an answer.
Yamaha was pretty good about colors matching at every connection and they also were pretty darn consistent about wire colors and purposes... for example "pink" is the wire color from the horn button to the horn on every 68-81 Enduro model I can think of.

Thanks for the replies, I know there has been some electrical butchery which is why I am looking for a wiring diagram, trouble is I cannot find one, my ignition has 9 wires coming from it into two multi plugs 4 and 5 wires, the only diagrams I can find ony have 4 wires from the ignition.
I have solved most of my problems but would still like to correct the wiring.

You probably have a multi-position switch... possibly 4 position... with "parking" or "city" lights that the US models didn't get... that is assuming your harness has plugs matching the switch plugs.
And again, listing the wire colors is helpful as well as the actual problem. Looking for a wiring diagram might sound like a "problem"... it really isn't... a wiring diagram is INFORMATION that might help solve a problem.
A problem is something like "my headlight doesn't work" or "I don't know what the different positions on the switch are for" or "What does the blue/red wire do?"

This type of question comes up a lot. I wonder if it's related to that age-old adage that men would rather wander around lost than ask for directions?
This image is hidden for guests.
Question: I have a problem. Does anyone have a map of downtown Narnia?
Answer: Nobody seems to have a map, but offers are made to provide directions if given more information as many people are familiar with Narnia... the directions they might be able to give if they had more information still could solve the problem... without a map.
Response: There are 4 roads and 5 roads. The maps I've seen only have 4 roads. I need a map of downtown Narnia that shows 4 roads and 5 roads.
We get it. The person asking wants a map that doesn't seem readily available. But if they told us where they are and that they need to get to the butcher shop, someone might be able to tell them to head east 2 blocks and turn left, butcher shop is on the right.
Problem solved, no map.

Thanks again MarkT, yes mine is a multi position switch, Yambits list one with the correct colour wires but in different positions also the look from the left light/indicator switch gear have a short 'jump lead' from the multi plug into the main loom but its been butchered so it does not go red to red or blue to blue etc but goes red to blue blue to red (colours as examples) I will take pics tomorrow and explain better.
The only fault I seem to have now is that the rear light goes out when the brake light comes on, no big deal as obviously the brake light is brighter.
The 3 wire multi plug for the flasher relay has the drive wire cut flush and it has a 2 pin flasher unit fitted, the indicators do work though.
I just want to tidy everything up really and make it as it should be to prevent any problems arising in the future and make it easier to follow a wiring diagram if I can ever fins one with a 9 wire ignition.

The turn signal hack is more or less correct. Original 3 wire flasher had a ground wire. That design is NOT the same as a modern 3 wire, though the plug is the same. Very hard to find a 3 wire flasher that needs a ground wire unless you find an original someplace.
Original 3 wire is replaced by modern 2 wire... you don't always need to cut the wires on the harness to do this "upgrade" but many people do.
