I got into the Yamaha Enduro's in 1974 with a new DT 175 that I rode for several years until getting a used DT 400B in 1978. The DT 400 was in rough shape. Looking for parts to fix the front hub so the speedometer would work I ran across a 1978 DT 400E that only had 600 miles on it in a barn. The guy had bought the bike new and had taken it in for a 500-mile checkup when he was rear ended by a car. The wreck bent the rear of the frame (rear fender support) straight up and jammed the rear tire in the swing arm. The guy puts the bike in neutral, and it won't roll and he thinks the motor is busted. He puts it in a barn. I offered him $20 for the front fork assembly (handlebar down including the front tire) thinking the guy is going to tell me to go jump in the pond. To my surprise the guy said "I'll make you a hell of a deal and sell you the whole thing for $40" Two $20's and in the truck, it went,
Long story short, had to put another frame under it ($400) and have ridden the bike off and on for the past 45 years and have less than $1,000 in it including fuel!
