DT175mx 1978 Oil Pump Not Pumping. was created by MikeK-uk
Hello again,
Clutch now seems much better (another thread relates).
New problem is oil pump has no pumping action.
I have bled the pump several times.
And i can see through the clear pipe that oil is not being pumped to the carb and the piston is not moving
Clutch cover slipped on nice and easy; no force required.
Looks like it is coming apart again.
Any thoughts on what I should be looking for?
Thanks.
Mike

I have a contact here in the UK who repairs oil pumps, should that be necessary. He is the "go to" person in the UK for the members of the UK based Aircooledrd club.
For those in the US, I believe that DEET is the "go to" person.

I am in uk so that could be useful.
Pump worked prior to taking clutch cover off to sort a clutch problem.
Therefore think i did someone wrong rather than faulty pump.
I realise pump cab be removing without taking clutch case off. Will do that and have a look to see if there is anything obvious.
Thanks,
Mike

You say you have bled the pump, so problem is likely not a kinked or blocked tank hose.
Oil pump cover removed and fuel tank drained, then filled with a pint or so of fuel with a splash of two stroke oil ( or using a secondary tank)
1. Start bike and let idle.
2. Press the pulley in towards the pump body as far as it will go.
3. Observe whether the piston is stroking. If not, switch off bike immediately.. You have missed something inside the clutch cover. My gut says the drive pin fell out.
4. If it is stroking, bleed pump again and repeat the process. You should see it pump oil up the line. You will not see it pump oil if you have not pushed the pulley right back against the spring.
If it is pumping oil. Put a measuring cylinder at the end of the oil line and count 200 pump strokes with pulley held back.. You should have 5ml of oil in the cylinder.
If it is not pumping oil (doubtful if it was working before) the pump has broken.

Thank you for that.
When i keep a little bit of finger pressure applied to the nut at the end of the plunget/piston, I can feel the pump stroking and the plunger/piston moves in and out and I can see oil being pumped to the carb. When i release that pressure the plunger/ pump movement stops. Its like the plunger does not want to follow whatever is causing the stroking action.

Sounds like it would best to send the pump to a professional.
There is a pin that the cable pulley ramp rides on... on yours, it should have a tiny hex head. (earlier models had a split pin) Did you happen to do anything to that pin? It's critical for the ramp to work (without it, pump stays at idle calibration). But if pin goes in too far it can jam the plunger. P.S. If you didn't touch that pin, DON'T!!!
It could also be corrosion or debris jamming the plunger or a broken internal spring.

I haven’t knowingly touched anything on the pump. I left it attached to the clutch cover when I removed the cover to sort a clutch problem.
Thanks for the tips and will have a look.
Will also remove the pump and will see what I see.
Not sure what I am looking for but maybe will spot something!
Mike

"Pump is moving in and out". Follow my instructions to the letter. Your fingers should be nowhere near the the pump plunger.
Just do what I told you.
Sorry if I sound harsh, but I have enjoyed a beer or two and I tend to defer to my yorkshireman pragmatism in such conditions.
Everything I said before, if followed faithfully is enough to diagnose your pump problem.

Does the pump have the pin in the side for the cable roller to ramp up on.
Depress the cable roller so it can get max stroke when running for a test.
Has all the shims been left out from under the piston plate which reduces the minimum stroke at least. Sound more like pin or threaded screw missing if that type.
Ok i'll go read the story fully, just skipping through.
& when its sorted replace that clear hose with original so you can't see what going on.

I liked Tinkicker's post for a reason! I taught school (orchestra, stringed instruments) for 28 years and the violin in private lessons even longer. I could tell kids what to do, but if they didn't want to do exactly that, they would fail until they did! Hope it's back together and working well.
