I currently run Boyesen reeds in  my 1975 DT400 and 1979 CR250 and they never had trouble.

The 1979 CR250 recently got hard to start and it is not due to the reeds as a reed valve that is not sealing properly and or chipped reeds can cause hard starting, no problems found there so I am still chasing it.

I agree with condensor!! I had the same issue a couple years back and once I installed a new condersor the bike has ran fine. I also race my RT3 and your issue sounds exactly like what I was dealing with. Quick tip, if you change out the condensor make sure you have a really good soldering iron. If not you won't get the connection soldered in properly.

A shorting condenser can cause the symptoms described, and they are cheap to replace, but don't rule out the 2 coils. A failing  ignition coil can cause the same issue, but a failing source coil is just as likely. When it just begins to fail, it may pass the ohm meter tests, yet not be good. The ohm tests only verify that the internal wiring is not open nor directly shorted, but a break down in the varnish insulation lets the 200-300 volts the coil produces, jump from wire to wire internally. This limits the coils maximum output voltage, but will not be detected in the ohm meter tests. (the ohm meter only puts out a few volts to make a resistance test) The ignition coil can also break down in the same way, but at higher voltage in the secondary.

I've now swapped out 4 out of my 5 early Yamaha enduros with electronic ignitions from Vape and never looked back. I just got sick of getting broke down with a low or no spark issue with points and condensers, plus I like the brighter voltage for a 12v headlight.
