@Mark T, thanks for the suggestion.

I got the videos on YouTube, never done it before. The first one is firing up the bike for the very first time in 40 or so years.

The second one was taken by my wife. It is only 10 seconds long and is a very low res video.

The latest..
Last week I got it going so late in the day that I only got part the way through the running cooling down break in process. This morning I was planning on riding it a bit harder as instructed for the Wiseco break in recommendations, which I modified a bit, using one of the break in procedures in the tech section here.

Well, trying to fire it up was wearing me out again, kicking and kicking, but no joy, not even a putt. So I resolved to look for the owners manual I got when I bought the bike back in the day. I looked for it before in my papers, but could not be found. Then I seen another folder where it could be and BINGO! found. I opened it up looking for a refresher on the starter lever position and other starting recommendations, upon opening up the first page, I find this little jewel. Something that I did not remember having. (I'm doing that a lot these days). So this gives me the exact date I bought it, coming up to 39 years ago in August.

I know it is trivial, but I was wanting to put together the timeline on the history of this bike for myself. This is an answered prayer that I never prayed, but the Good Lord seen fit for me to keep this bit of history for me to find later. I asked my older brothers about how long did I ride it before I put it away when the mouse nest was found in the air box, but they only remember the DT-1 that I had mostly, not much on this one.

So after I rested a bit, finding this bill of sale and reading up on how to start this rig, I followed the manual, it fired right up, that was a relief! Rode it for for 5 more minutes, this time riding it more "normal" and it is setting right not cooling so I can do it again for 10 minutes next time, then 15 minutes the last and final time. Full bore from there.

Another thing I just noticed, on the inside of the cover I wrote the oil mix ratio, another little piece of history I didn't recall. I will be able to hide my own Easter eggs and go look for them myself if this keeps up.

The saga continues....
Was getting ready to try the neighbors trail he has around his property. I was following a rough spot in the beginning of the path, not hardly 100 ft into my ride and got stuck in muddy ditch where some concrete rubble filled in some of it, and just enough to bounce me around enough even at the slow pace I was going, to get me stuck. Got out of that pretty easy and headed back on the trail. about another 300 ft and needed to make a turn, put on the brake and no brake! Thankfully I was going slower than before since I only had a working front brake that stopped me in good time before the turn got bad.

Got off the bike and took a look at the brake finding this...

I got the bike back to the house and told my daughter what happened, she mentioned, "you ought to ask the neighbor if he has a metal detector to see if you can find the missing metal part".... So I did.... He had one!!!! About a half hour later I find the one part I was zeroing in on. Talk about a blessing!!!

So I start looking online, just in case I needed to get other parts too, then it dawned on me, DUH, I am missing the spring, the bolt and nut that started this mess (other than me not tightening it up enough to start with, let alone no cotter pin in the castellated nut), I texted my neighbor about my oversight, he will let me borrow it again tomorrow.

Oh damn. things sent to try us [you]. Identical thing happened in 1969 to my bosses DT1 about 10 miles from home so was a careful ride home with a front brake only. Curved the brake arm like a banana very neatly so don't think it broke the brake rod in his case before skidding to a halt on the beach.
If you have a bike wrecker close by you might be lucky & match up the brake rod for length & a spring plus nut if you can't save your nut though should be ok. Just a 10mm bolt from the hardware shop with two nuts as a lock nut setup. [Or drill a splitpin hole of course] Then dodge the mud & go & have fun. Hook a high gear & make it work without having to rev & see how she goes for torque.

Also, if ya stuck for a spring & want to go riding just wind on a 6mm nylock nut ahead of sliding the rod through the brake arm pin. Leave that nut far enough forward so you can adjust the brake then wind the nut back to the arm pin. It'll make sure the brake returns that way. So long as you have a good pedal return spring too. Have a good look at your brake shoes as they just got a very hard time in an instant. Unlikely to have broken--but!!.

@RT325, Thanks for the advise I can get the rod welded back together I hope tomorrow. I will remove the rear wheel and give the brake shoes the once over too. That is a good idea, for what it went through. The original brake rod nut is good, I got it running freely on the threads during the rebuild. My plan is to have those plated again during the "cleanup" phase of the rebuild after I ride this for a season, to make sure its all in good order.

@RT325, I got a look at the brake shoes, all good there, the rod was welded back together, I cleaned up the weld and hand filed the profile back to original the best I could.

I had started looking for a compatible Yamaha brake rod online while the bike was down and by chance found an identical match. The length, diameter, all of it, including the nut and spring.... Just what I needed....so it seemed. The picture on the website shown the bell shaped bulge that kept the spring where it needed to be, so I though PERFECT!!! I ordered it. Upon opening the box yesterday, I seen something different. Instead of the bell shaped  spot , it has a double pinch in the rod to keep a washer at the spot needed for the spring.... bummer.

If anybody needs a brake rod, I got it at Mikes XS

Upon going back to the site, I overlooked the one picture that would have shown me what I needed to know about the washer. Oh well....
