Oil Tank Cap was created by phrog44

I am slowly resurrecting my 1972 DT2 250.  The oil tank and oil tank cap are original but the threads on the cap don't match the thread on top of the oil tank.  I know there is a missing gasket but, I can't find anything to indicate that an adaptor is used to seal the cap and adapt the different threads.  What am I missing?

These caps shrink over the years. Same for Honda and Toyota cars. Need to buy a new one. Several sources including Yamaha dealers and eBay.

I use fishing boat plugs They seal better and they are easier to get out The rubber ones that are brass and the tip 90 degrees to lock.

The cap is hard plastic.  I don't think it has shrunk much, but it probably didn't seal on its own.  It seems there is a rubber part missing.

The fishing boat plug may work if I could find one the right size.

The boat plug is the best but I wiil admit it aint stock.  BUT it doesn leak and if it does you acan tighten it up to make it bigger.  Whatever works and who sees it anyways.  But they do see leaking oil;

I suggest one of the chinese machined aluminum caps. Yeah you read that right. I now have 2. Look stock, never shrink or break, all black. About $ 11.00 each plus shipping. oh yeah, uses stock gasket.

I have the same issue with my DT3 cap.
I like the alternatives mentioned above (maybe less pricey than the $24 OEM?), but how about a link you guys ?

I measure a 1-1/8" opening.   I can find 1" and 1-1/4" boat plugs.   I have not used these before.  Do I go oversize or undersize, or keep looking?

I gave some thought to all three options presented for fixing the Incredible Shrinking Tank Cap issue, which I have as well as phrog44.

However, all three solutions involve 1.Spending more money, and 2.Letting go of my original tank cap.   As you know, a bike is only original once.

So,  I decided to unshrink the original cap.  I carefully heated it from the inside with a torch so as to not mess up the threads,  and then pushed a socket into it which was just a wee bit larger than the cap interior.  This forced the threads out.

Then I cut a gasket out of some thick gasket sheet stock.

So, now I have my original cap fitting snug in its threads, and I didn't spend a penny.
