I am finally getting somewhere on this 68 DT1 engine. Keep forgetting to order certain seals or small parts so i have to keep waiting to finish it up. Did get the center cases back together, cylinder and head, Ignition done and installed. right side internals, clutch back on, decided to replace springs as well as clutch plates. flywheel side cleaned up pretty good for how bad everything was corroded. For a rider bike it's turning out pretty nice. Waiting on seal for oil pump and rubber grommet where oil lines go thru to get right side together and be done with it. Coming from U.K and there postal is on strike.

Can't wait to get on the frame and the rest of the bike.

A couple more surprises on the 68 DT1, There is non-ISO screws in places on this bike that are not on later model DT1's including my 1970 &71 model. While reconditioning the oil pump out of curiosity, I found out the 4 screws holding the unit together are a different thread pitch then later model pumps. Also the shaft and pully are different on this pump.

The clutch actuator cover cap screws are non-ISO screws as well.  Good thing the original screws were in good condition! Could not use the new screws that came in the kit.

Wasn't to thrilled with the aftermarket gasket for the oil pump i got either. Another thing is this bike has that plastic preformed oil line not like the later banjo fittings with rubber lines. Not sure how well the new copper seal washers from Yamaha  will work with this plastic line. Wish i could find some fiber gaskets like what came on it. Anyone know a source for fiber seals for the banjo fittings and not the new copper style seal washers please let me know.

I threw the copper ones aside and I've been able to find the fiber ones on Ebay. I found out the oil pump mounting, coil mount and possibly tank badge screws were non ISO.  My formed plastic line was intact too but I don't recall if the assembly had sealing washers. I won't be re-assembling until spring so you're ahead of me.

Pedalcrazy,

Mine had the black fiber seals originally. ( see image below) Took me forever to get them off the plastic line without damage to the plastic so i assume they were original. I seen the ones on e-bay. Not cheap and no one seller has 4? I know, it's a $10,000 to $15,000 dollar bike but darn $50.00 to $60.00 for 4 small washers? Even for me that's high and i usually don't care what it cost to get it right on these bikes. Lol!  I don't plan on using the copper ones now. Maybe i can make some out of good gasket material?

Good to know there may be more places for the non-ISO screws on the bike itself. I plan on having this bike built by the end of April. Nice vintage bike show usually at the end of May at the Gilmore car museum here in Michigan. Plan on showing or entering all bikes into the show. Still deciding on if i am going to have the original chrome parts re chromed or try to find NOS. Need a seat strap and would like a NOS seat cover.  Sad that i know a guy that has all this stuff and more and is not willing to get rid of it at this time.

What type of a restoration are you doing on yours? A show bike or original ??

I think i am getting carried away with the 68 DT1 on this thread! Didn't mean to turn it into a 68 DT1 rebuild thread. I will probably only show 1 or 2 more updates on the 68 then that's it until bike is complete in April if all goes as planned.

Back to the 70 & 71 DT1's. This was the last picture ( below) right before it got cold here. I ended up replacing the KDI seat foam in the 70 DT1 with one from speed & sports and it fits much better and feels more like a original stock seat like on the 71 DT1. It just worked better with what ever brand reproduction seat cover is on the bike. The KDI foam is softer and about 3/4 inch shorter. "But" I am going to use the KDI foam with a KDI cover on the 68 DT1 together and see how that works out. Hopefully the match set will be good.

I also ended up finding NOS cables, tach, speedo and front brake for the 70 DT1. So it now has all the correct Yamaha cables on the bike. Also installed some new Yamaha buddy pegs. It's getting darn close to what i want the bike to be without restoring it. I am real happy with it! It's "extremely " hard to pick a favorite between these 2 DT1's  There that close.

Skydancer, I painstakingly try to put my bikes back to showroom condition. Like you, I search out oem NOS parts that are priced within reason (sometimes that still means crazy high!).  I came across a gentleman who was looking to thin out many 68 parts From when he worked on these old bikes. I bought NOS seat cover, tank badges, taillight bracket, Stanley taillght assembly, top chain guard, tach, ignition and probably more (all NOS)!  I also bought an original paint gas tank from him but needed some repairs and will be repainted for another 68. On the seat cover...I was sooo happy to score an NOS cover. Still has the Yamaha sticker inside. But I had to use re-pop foam and when I installed the cover it just didn't fit right. So I took it off and used a KDI cover (I think). So, I'll be looking for a good used seat that I can rob the foam from and try the NOS cover again. I think I painted the motor side covers 4 times until I found a close match to some original pieces. I'm down to just a little motor assembly to be finished but kind of on pause until after first of the year. I too know guys with NOS 68 parts that just won't sell. I'm not selling anything like that at this time either. I hope to build a couple more 68 bikes...I have enough spare parts now LOL.

Nice. Try a seat foam from speed & sports. Very close to the original foam in feel and size. Works well with a stock Yamaha seat cover on the 68-71 seats. Not knocking KDI's stuff but some seat foams work better with other brand seat covers. As i mentioned  above i am going to try the KDI foam with his seat cover on the 68. If it doesn't look real good then i will get another speed & sports foam. I have bought 3  so far and like them.

How about chrome work. Know of any good chrome shops around this area. 2 of them that i used to use years ago have up there prices so much it's not even realistic. The other guy is 18 weeks out! too long for me.

I found some fiber oil line seals at Home depot today. $2.65 for 4 of them. Lol! Had to order. my local HD was out.  if they work out good i will let you know.

Skydancer….thanks a bunch on the Speed & Sport tip. I defo want to use this oem seat cover but haven’t bought anything from Speed & Sport. I’ll be looking them up this weekend. For plating, Up until a year ago I was shipping parts out to Cali but lost 2 weeks production just for shipping. Plus results weren’t really what I wanted. Now I use a zinc shop about an hour away and a chrome shop about 45 minutes away. For chrome my last parts took 4 months and he told me he almost stopped taking new orders because he was so far behind. I dropped some more parts off middle of November and he told me middle of January. We shall see. Still very expensive though. Rims, springs, instrument buckets, fork parts, nuts and bolts. In some ways though they looked “over chromed” meaning triple show chrome. Original parts maybe weren’t triple plated? Maybe just chrome over copper instead of chrome over nickel over copper. IDK.
