Clutch/shifting/overheating problem caused by pinched thrust bearing

After riding my RT1B for about 20 minutes the clutch would slip, it would be difficult to shift into neutral and the right side crankcase cover would be too hot to touch. But no unusual noises.

The thrust bearing, item # 17, part # 93341-23307 was pinched by the spacer, item # 16, part # 214-16181. So it would not be able to spin freely when the clutch lever was pulled in. There is a taper on the end of the spacer so it is easy for the thrust bearing to drop a little if not careful when installing the clutch basket and hub and related components. I dabbed a little grease on it and the thin washer to hold them in place but was still careful to make sure the spacer did not move outboard.

I crunched the thrust bearing on my dt1e. Took me forever to figure out that a washer came with the thrust bearing if my memory serves me. Such a cool bike

Had to go back into the clutch again. Same symptoms reappeared after a few miles. The thrust bearing was bent. Looks like it got pinched again. I noticed that the spacer had more of a taper. Compared several NOS spacers and the taper varies. I took one with the least amount of taper and ground off a few more thousandths of an inch to reduce the taper even more. Put it back together. The taper seems unnecessary to me not that I'm questioning the design engineer.

Put it back together and ran for 20 minutes with a lot of stop and go shifting. Seems good for now. I've never had this problem before.

It's interesting that you were able to remove material from the spacer without the basket locking up when nut was tightened.

I only took off about 10 thousandths of an inch. It already had a very shallow taper. I also made sure everything was spinning freely as I was assembling it and tightening the nut.

If anyone else has NOS or used spacers I'd be interested in the amount of taper they have as compared to the ones in my pictures.

Yes i'm with MarkT & was just thinking 'that' about shortening the spacer. But 10thou & if the hub still revolves freely when the nut is tightened then you must be safe. Great how you worked it all out in the end as that's always very satisfying.

I recently bought a NOS complete clutch assembly. It had a spacer that had reduced taper and wider oil groove and larger oil holes.
