testing the stator on a DT2...am I doing this right?

I managed to grab myself a new analogue Yamaha Pocket Tester, part number 90890-03112. There are none showing on fleabay, but CMSNL (in Europe) show as having them in stock and maybe also a few US stores that don't list on fleabay (CMSNL was the cheapest of the lot I viewed).

+1 to leaving that single black female unconnected to anything.

Hey guys, I did a quick video of how I am testing the stator to hopefully explain a little better and show what i'm possibly doing wrong. I got a brand new battery for my tester too just in case the old one was causing any faulty readings.

Thanks again to everyone thats chimed in! I really appreciate it. I have much to learn.  I'm not coming to the conclusion that the stator is bad, but I would like to be able to know how to test it and work my way up the path on the harness for my own understanding too.

I have the exact same bike, when I first got it it had good spark and ran fine but then lost spark.  I was trying my best to diagnose but with limited electrical knowledge I couldn't follow much of what I was being told here.  I ended up getting help from a fellow forum member who lived not to far from me, what we found, and this may or may not apply to yours but about 1/4 inch of the end of the spark plug wire had burned off somehow so by cutting it back then screwing the spark plug cap back on I once again had good spark.  Good luck, hope  yours is as simple as that!

I have a bad internet connection right now so didn’t see whole video.

Need ohmmeter with Rx1 scale.  My HF meter like yours never works for me.

Black should read 0 ohms with points closed. Perfect connection to ground. If not, point contacts are dirty or damaged.

Should read about 1 to 2 ohms with points open.

I got spark!!  It ended up being the points mechanism.  I took it off to inspect even closer only to realize there was an excessive amount of corrosion build up around the pivot point.  I took it off and ran a continuity test on it while it was gunked up.  it showed no difference when the points were closed vs open so it was grounding out through the rust I'm assuming.  I tested for continuity on just the points mechanism with them closed vs open after cleaning thoroughly and now I was seeing a difference!  put it all back together, hooked up the plug and BAM!  nice bright spark!

Wanted to share my find and thank everyone that chimed in to help.  I'm sure I'll have some more questions as I continue on!

Sorting a problem is one of the coolest moments of tinkering with these old bikes!
Hands on compared to just wondering… Nice
