1971 AT1C Restoration was created by ABN69STYL

Hi all,
This bike was my Father-in-law's who bought it brand new in 71.   He rode it between his 2 farms here in SE Iowa (only 2900ish miles on it). It sat untouched in his machine shed for over 40 years. I decided to see if I could get her running again. I am not an enthusiast so, after watching many videos by Dale Sweger, YouTube, I went at it. If I get it running again, I plan to restore it for the family. Wish me luck and I'll update.

Great that it's been kept in the family.

I wouldn't over restore it - after all, it's only original once!

If you're lucky, carb clean, change of fluids, new battery and clean the points faces and it might start right up. If you're unlucky, it might pop a crank seal. However, these can be replaced with the engine in situ.

Please replace both sets of brake shoes. New ones are still available from Yamaha and CMSNL and Partzilla should have the current part numbers. If you can, order them through your local bike shop.

Photos would be great, although you need to use a third party host. Once you have made three posts (MarkT has updated this with Mako), you should be able to upload them.

Thanks for the fine points.  The carb was stuffed full of dirt, coal, mouse droppings and every seal leaked.  I did completely tear down the engine and replaced all the bearings, seals and orings.   Im currently awaiting piston rings that should arrive today.  As for restoration, if I get it running, I plan to only go to where it was when he was ridding it in the 70s.   I will upload pics once I figure that out.  Thanks.

Would love to see it, if you can do the photo post thing (I haven't done it, so no help here). That was my first real motorcycle. I bought it when it was 2 years old (lots of lawn mowing jobs!). To this day, I can hardly believe how well it stood up to 4 years of me thrashing it. Eventually, I traded it and some cash to a guy for a DT-250A (1974), which was equally resilient to some sound thrashing.... Great little bikes!
