That head is a 284 RT1M\RT1MX head too.my bike is 501760 if memory serves. I think Yamaha started producing these in August 1970 and from there until around September/October production ended. the serial number went to 52xxx roughly. I have a 1971 RT1MX engine and the vin begins at 53xxx on that engine and it has

the improved 1971 transmission, you can tell by the way the case looks around the countershaft/shift drum area. other than that the engines are identical on the 2 model years.

here is a video of my 1970 RT1M with the unmuffled factory pipe installed. yes it is pretty loud and it always startles me when it lights off.

Awesome, Dave!  I love it.   It sounds great.   Hoping to have mine making noise again soon.  Mines 50515, so yours must be pretty early.  Cool stuff.

Man that sounds great! I have an RT1 with the street exhaust and doesn't sound nearly that nice!

That sounds nice.
When i take my road version up our street everybody looks because that's loud to but sounds crap compared to that.
