50% eBay Fees

What MarkT said is exactly my gripe why am I paying a final value fee of around 12% on the final sale price plus the sales tax? I am not making money on the collected sales tax! I am hoping someone wakes up to this incorrect calculation in their software and says oops we owe sellers a crap load of money for incorrectly collecting final value fees. Of course that would never happen, if anything they would issue a credit towards your future owed final value fees.

I remember being informed that the sellers are being charged for Ebay to do the tax collection. They’re not doing it for free. They are charging the seller to collect the tax.

ASCO that may be the case, but the 12-15% they are already making off the final value fee and postage should be enough and absorbed, that would be like going and buying a T.V. and paying the price for the T.V. and accompanying sales tax and then paying the merchant more to collect and pay the tax to the government for you? I still think it is due them having a monopoly and being able to do as they please to keep shareholders happy.

Perhaps it makes Craigslist more appealing? But then I don’t sell on either of them sites.

One must learn to take the bad eBay sale’s that we dislike and stay positive for tomorrow the big sale actually comes ( if your line is always in the water ) the DT1 clutch actuator sold today to even things out - the laws of averages and misery.

Try advertising all eBay items for a price which covers all the various add-on fees. Make sure you include an image of your phone number in the listing.

In the written description, clarify that the price is inclusive of all eBay fees. Anyone interested in the item, and wanting to save money can make contact by phone.

If you buy a high value item from eBay and need to collect in person, speak to the seller on the phone, arrange to pay cash, and suggest they cancel the sale after you have paid in cash and collected the item. Means the seller avoids the often very costly eBay fee.

I remember when services like ebay didn't exist...  Unless you happened to know a source, many parts for these old bikes were simply impossible to find.

Ebay brought the world to my doorstep...  I expect it was much the same when Sears, Roebuck, & Co. started their mail order catalog business in 1892?

I appreciate their services and the opportunities and conveniences ebay and companies like them provide me...  this hobby would not be possible for most of us without them or companies like them.

And yes, we can complain and bitch about their policies and prices.  My remedy to that is if I feel a service is far too expensive or has "unfair" charges and policies, I don't use them.  Simple as that.  If enough people "vote with their feet", change is inevitable.

One thing I won't do is compromise my personal values.  To each his (or her) own.

New car dealers don't pay ebay fees I betcha. They just use the ebay ad to bring a buyer to them and complete the sale off ebay, then cancel the ad. So use buy it now or make offer, they won't hit buy it now but they will contact you to make an offer. Problem solved. Paying with pay pal protects the buyers money and they will usually the pay the pay pal fee of a couple percent to protect their money.

Use eBay simply as an inexpensive form of advertising if you are a seller. If you are a buyer, try to contact sellers direct, so they can avoid paying the fees.

For the more expensive items, sellers can normally use an old style classified ad on fleabay, with a relatively small fixed fee. If I remember rightly, I bought a bike for about £2k and the seller paid a fee of £20.
