Tools of the Trade: Electrical was created by Sarge

TE #1:
Here are listed some of the electrically-related tools which should prove very helpful in your efforts to troubleshoot & set timing on your Enduros:

OEM Point Checker. This battery operated unit works when the test leads are connected to the appropriate contacts per your instruction manual, and the needle moves just as the points begin to open. There was also a much larger unit in a padded case called an "Electro-Tester". This tester had two gauges and was helpful when conducting tests on the later Yamahas with CDI ignitions (see TE #2).

Spark Light. This is a small device which allows one to see if you are getting a spark more easily. It is inserted between your spark plug & coil plug. A small bulb lights when a spark is generated across it. In this case, I will have to make an adapter so it will more readily attach to the spark plug cap utilized on most Enduros.

Trouble light. This can be used in lieu of the point checker and is easily obtained. Internal light in handle glows or disappears on making/breaking contact across the points.

Electrical Contact Replacement Kit w/Calibrated Crimp tool. This unit is available from Vintage Connections. If you plan to do any electrical repairs on a wiring harness (and maintain your sanity), this tool is a must. Larger sets with more connectors available.

Dry Vinyl Tape (DVT). The 3/4 inch width x 250 foot roll (18mm x 76mm) is ideal for making or repairing vintage wiring harnesses. Since it is not gummed, it avoids attracting dirt, etc. (there was an attached link, but the item is no longer available there). Not Pictured.

TE #2:

Volt/Ohm meter. A good VOM; either digital or with a sweep, are very useful when troubleshooting electrical problems. Sometimes the digital ones seem to be very sensitive when working on older electronic devices like a rectifier. Having one of each would be a plus.

The Electro-Tester. Used by Yamaha shop mechanics and consists of two meters, probes, etc. to perform various tests. These are outlined on the metal data plate in the lid and consist of:

1. Insulation & Resistance
2. Condenser
3. Voltage
4. Current (20A)
5. Continuity
6. Spark
7. Timing Lite
8. Current (5A)
9. Starter

The one pictured comes in a metal case. I believe earlier kits came in a vinyl & composite case made by Okuda Koki. A nice item but these were seldom purchased by individual Yamaha owners, other than professional riders as they were not cheap.
