Soaking a chain was created by GaryInVA
The chain that is on my 79 IT400 only has 2300 miles on it. It looks like it was well lubed when it was stored away 30 years ago. So now it has a crusty, hard coating. I'll eventually replace it with a new one. What would be the best thing to soak it in to dissolve this crusty, hard coating? There is no rust I can see so I'd like to use it for a while before replacing.

Reading on the BMW chain gang forum those guys say ATF is the best chain lube. I would say soaking in 50/50 ATF/acetone could help loosen things up. Will probably take a little time to work and hopefully a stiff brush would work.

Just bought a 428/120 chain for Brandy at $18.00 delivered, we toss them like old shoes out at that price.

Chains are SO much better today then they were back then. Plus as chain wears, it takes sprockets with it... so a new chain on worn sprockets will quickly "stretch".
a good RK 520 chain is not very expensive... I'd just replace as using it could be risky if it did get rusty and it might be "false economy" to use it?
