All right guys so I've been the guy trying to locate an ignition system for my dt250 engine. I don't have the bike just the engine. I was going to swap it out of my cb175 that has leaky valves.. 4 strokes

Don't worry the CB 175 is not an all original piece it's been stripped down and is what you would call a cafe racer.Wow looking for parts for my dt250b engine I came across this piece. I went yesterday to have a closer look and the kid has everything including the mikuni carburetor and a clean New York State title. It's a 1978 dt175. He says it doesn't run. I pulled the plug to see if it was getting any spark and it wasn't but he said it was last year or they gotten sparked from it at some point. He thought it might not be getting spark because the kill switch is kind of jacked up. I haven't gone into the wiring diagrams on these so I'm not sure if it's an open or closed kill switch. I did take off the Magneto cover and even though I didn't take off the flywheel I could see that the Magneto looked pristine. I also took some resistance measurements with my multimeter and they appear to be on spec.I had him kick it over with my thumb over the hole.. he didn't know I was covering the hole and while trying to kick it over he said "I don't know man it might be stuck". Kid was about 16 or 17 years old he initially told me he thought that it needed a new top end, and maybe it does but it sure felt like there was plenty of compression being built up. He's got a small box of all the other miscellaneous parts except for the side covers. He was asking $400 and he said he would take $350. .To some of you this might be a no-brainer but my wifey isn't exactly thrilled about my obsession to build things with engines. What are your guys's thoughts.. it's about an hour away from my homestead but I have to go there tomorrow finish up a job. Let me know what you guys think!

I'd buy it because it has a title. You can sell what's left and make the $350 back. Even just the frame and the title would sell, I'd think. Wasn't someone just looking for a 78 DT? Enduronut had what he wanted, though.

I would go for it. I restored a 1978 DT175 a few years ago. it is a great bike! parts at that time were very easy to come by.

I rebuilt the CDI magneto and did a 12 volt conversion recently, the bike itself is pretty easy to work on.

they also respond well to hopping up too.

my bike has stage 2 porting and a 26mm carb and a moto tassinari vforce 3 reed assembly plus I converted it to a 12 volt electrical system, it's a very solid bike all around.

I  used the Rex's Speed shop version.
www.rexs-speedshop.com/product/yamaha-dt175-12-volt-conversion/

very easy to install and no mods to the stator needed.

the unit is a 12 volt voltage regulator that replaces the stock one and it runs a 35 watt or up to a 45  watt headlight very well.

A  $200. dollar bike all day long.
Tons of work.
You will need to sink a $1000 plus on what it needs.
*Don't even think about the side covers,
Gotta put number plates on the side.

(*) Been looking  for years for that one ! No side covers worth buying .

on that note " Have a wonderful evening everyone !! )

I got my 1978 DT175 for free but it had a lot more missing parts and had the right foot peg sheared off. I repaired the foot peg and with Enduronut's help I rounded up parts for it and another member had the tach, speedo and Bracket. it was worth it fixing up to me.

I waited a bit and found a decent set of side panels which I promptly bought on Ebay.
