Ignition compatibility was created by LuckyLuke

Quick question.  I have been doing some research on this and not sure if it's possible.  I have a 1972 ignition coil for a DT2 and I am wondering if it is possible to use it on a DT1.  The primary and secondary Ohms ratings are slightly different but not significant

I was wondering if anyone has looked at doing this before?  The part numbers are different and so I am not sure what the risk is if substituting them.

Thanks ....Luke

I have no first hand knowledge of this one but I wouldn't hesitate to hook it up and run it.  Done it many times with coils from different models.  As long as both coils are intended for use with points systems I'm sure it'll work.

I wouldn't try a points coil on a CDI system or vice versa.  Coils are transformers and I believe the ratio of windings between the primary and secondary is different between points and CDI systems.

I've never had a problem swapping coils between magneto models either.

The ET points-magneto design Yamaha used has been called a "mechanical CDI"... I've used the points coil with a CDI and vice-versa...  probably isn't "correct" but has worked just fine.

Technically the inductance of the primary should be matched to the system, however in practise most CDi and points coils are fairly interchangeable.

The important feature is that there is frame around the coil to carry magnetic flux, this is what helps give a good spark
