Bluntz465,
Well, comparing a 350cc 2-stroke against a 1679cc V-4 4-stroke, no. BUT, cc for cc, i.e. 350cc 2-stroke against 350cc 4-stroke, heck yes!

It would be interesting if two-stroke development had continued at a strong pace... The modern two strokes (many of which haven't been changed in 10+ years) are putting out impressive power numbers... two to three times more power than they did in the 1970's

I resurrected this thread, I was wondering if there actually was a difference in performance between the two bikes. Has anyone owned both bikes?
Thanks Mark

I think I posted this someplace else... US required "passing" and "braking" performance numbers to be provided that I imagine was done under controlled conditions to make the comparison... well, "comparable". Obviously lower times and distances mean better acceleration. Factory gearing choices could affect the results.
From this data, they look pretty equal with a slight edge to the 400 as you might expect.

my dt360 feels like the same power as my 77 dt400, with much worse suspension

I have all 3 in my possession and the only issue with the 360 is trying to figure out jetting. It seems like it is either too rich or too lean compared to the other two which both are easy to jet. All 3 have stock intake and exhaust

Any opinions the best year DT400, and is the mono shock rebuildable?
Thanks Mark

DT400 monoshock is basically the same shock design as the DT175... I posted instructions on here how to rebuild. Can be done by shops too. A nitrogen charge valve needs to be added or you can use a YZ100 shock body that has the valve installed already. I've done both.
Passing performance of the 77-78 DT400 is identical to 75-76.
Monoshock is definitely an improvement in suspension.

If you're not particularly tall the 77-78 sits a little high.
