Greetings from North East England, where I've recently bought a December 1974 (1975 model) DT175, believed to be a US import, the bike is missing one or two bits which I've sourced repos, and one or two bits i may have to fabricate/concoct.

My intention with the bike is to bring it back to roadgoing condition as a weekend plaything and possibly take to one or two shows, the one thing i don't want to do is a full strip down, because it will probably end up never going back together, so my intention is to fettle a section at a time. so far I've repaired the leaking fuel tank, I've also sourced some repo indicators tail lamp bracket and mirrors, and have ordered a seat cover.

The main thing I'm missing is the exhaust silencer (maybe called spark arrester in the US) its not beyond my skill to fabricate something suitable that i can use to get the bike roadworthy whilst looking for a proper one. Does anyone have any photos of this part and possibly some dimensions, if so it would help greatly.

The other thing i would like help with is filling in the V55 form ( this is a DVLA form to register the bike for road use), i checked before buying the bike that it has been registered on NOVA (all import taxes paid) so that part is straightforward, but I'm clueless regarding some of the questions on the form, if anyone can advise or has been through the process id be grateful for any advice or assistance

I will try and post up some pictures later

Best Regards

 from sunny Salisbury, Wiltshire.

Do you mean this part? I think that the spark arrestor sits in the bowels of the main exhaust.

PIPE, OUTLET for Yamaha - order at CMSNL

If you haven't done so already, replace both sets of brake shoes - they should still be available from Yamaha.

Consider fitting a 6v voltage regulator (or a 12v headlight bulb!) if your bike doesn't already have one fitted.

If you hit the link below you can scroll thru some photos. The first one shows you the end portion circled in red that I assume you are looking for. If so, the next two photos are similar sized aftermarket silencers that can often be found on EBay. There is a distributor here in the states called Dennis Kirk and they sell these universal silencers. The last image shows you the internals on the stock OEM pipe from a larger displacement enduro, but I would imagine the internals are similar on the 175 pipe. It won’t be an easy task to try and fab one up to that extent. That’s why I suggest the aftermarket silencers which can be repacked with fiberglass to somewhat quiet them down compared to an open straight pipe. Although the unit from Dennis Kirk cannot be repacked.

The insert that Alan posted a picture of is technically part of the USA "spark arrestor"...  The insert allows you to clean out the carbon chunks the arrestor is designed to capture and is a requirement...  the "guts" of the arrestor are located just before this "clean out" which in 1975 was in the removable muffler that inserts into the main exhaust system.

I have an extra complete muffler/spark arrestor for the 1975 DT175 if you can't find one closer..  Shipping to UK from the USA might be expensive.

Thanks guys,

the part Alan posted is exactly what I’m missing, and seeing the cut away one I accept your point that it may be easier and cheaper to use an aftermarket item

many thanks for the help

That's good that you only need the insert and not the tube itself because the aftermarket silencers are not designed to fit into the opening on the main exhaust. So it takes some creativity to make it fit. Hopefully you can find and purchase the insert. If not,  I can pull my insert and send you some basic dimensions. Let me know your plans.

Hi I am from Scotland and I have registerd my USA import 1971 AT1 in the UK, do you have the U.S Title for the bike? If not you will need a dating letter, I got mine from the VJMC (Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club) if you are a member the dating letter costs £35 and for non members it's £55, here is a link to the site: 's an 15 minute video and it's really useful:
While waiting to recieve your dating letter you should fill in the V55/5 fourm (the gent in the video shows you how) and I myself and the Gent in the video included pictures of the bike with pictures of the vin & engine number to show that the bike is original and unaltered (they sent me these back). And a short letter written in Microsoft Word (at least that is how I did it) stating you would like age related number plates, I can't remember but the video will tell you everything you need.

edit: I have forgotten to paste in the links but
here is the link to the VJMC site for the dating letter:
and here is the YouTube video:
