Tachometer drive gear shim question

Replacing the slipping clutch on my 1975 DT175.When looking at the parts diagram before reinstalling the tach drive gear, it shows a plastic spacer, the tach drive gear, and then a "shim" going on the shaft. (248-17837-00-00).I didn't see a shim there when I took it apart to clean everything. Is this shim a precision part, or is it a just a steel washer? Is it even needed? I found one on ebay for $13, but if I can just use a thin washer, it will be cheaper and less hassle if I don't have to order it. Thanks

Yes i see it here in the link. It'll be a high tensile quality nice smooth washer & not sure how thick but maybe the two middle numbers 17--1 & 7 could mean 1.7mm thick. I doubt very much it would cause an issue if you didn't have one there. Main thing is be sure its not sitting in the case somewhere. Run a magnet stick around. If it definitely was missing then i think you've answered your question as was working well without it. Plenty of oil thrown around up there. As usual, just my opinion.

Check the cover...  "Stiction" sometimes keeps it there.

Just make sure not in engine as said...  many engines have them missing that I've opened so probably wouldn't hurt much to leave it out.

Used to be available from Yamaha...  fits a lot of bikes so probably can find one cheaper someplace.  It's a nicely finished washer, I wouldn't use a regular one.

Not in the engine. I thoroughly cleaned everything inside since I have it apart.
Thanks.
