Lowering the gearing will reduce the load on the engine, requiring less throttle to maintain any given speed.  Taller gears will make the engine work harder and will require more throttle.

This low throttle sputter is hard to tune out of these vintage big bores.  It bugs the hell out of me too.

turboDan
thanks, I will chew that 1 with a glass of red as still struggling with it lol age. but I think I know what you mean, suppose its like trying to do 20 in top gear, more throttle? I thought by being low geared it would need to rev more to get the speed, like a trials bike? still chewing..

Low gears gives you MORE revs which gives you more power which makes you use LESS throttle for the same speed.
Once you go more than 16t it feels a bit chunky gettin going in 1st gear with a big single!
I wish these bikes had a bit shorter 1st gear.... or a 6th speed....

so you would go to a 16 T front max, how many extra chain links would be required for this? I was hoping to maintain the chain on it as not that old. If I was short on the chain, could I get away with a second split link?
lastly is the crank nut that holds the front sprocket a right or left hand thread. i.e left to undew or right to undew I cannot remember
