DT400 1976 UK Ignition Switch was created by hatrick1960

Hi,

I need to change my ignition switch as it is broken. I have removed it and it has two connectors, one a 6 pin and the other a 4 pin with wires in all positions.
I've been looking every where for a replacement but all I can find is a switch with two connectors but only 9 wires?
Will this work, is it the correct one or is there another supplier somewhere that I can use with a 6 & 4 pin connector?
Thanks

Yes, all they have is one with one 4 pin connector.
My switch has 4 positions - off, start bike, power for lights and I think the last position is for parking lights.

Has been discussed here before...  UK and perhaps European markets had the "city light" or "parking light" capability with an extra little bulb in the headlamp if I remember correctly.

Perhaps your switch can be repaired or if you search the forum you might find the other posts.  I can't remember the outcome.

"I need to change my ignition switch as it is broken."

In what way is it broken? They can be repaired.

Could you post photos?

You have to 'fiddle' the key in order to turn the ignition on, sometimes takes 2 or 3 minutes to make it work.

Could be a bent lever in the mechanism.

Are you anywhere near a master locksmith (I don't mean a standard key cutter)? They could remove the mechanism and effect some sort of repair for you (might involve removing one of the levers).

It might also be possible to replace just the mechanism, if you can pick up one of the same style.

I'm assuming that the number on the key matches that on the ignition and that the key isn't damaged.

Hi - is the key perfectly flat? I have a key which has been bent, then bent back ‘flat’ (previous owner). It doesn’t operate the lock very well.
It may be worth ordering a new key (eBay) using the 4 digit code on the lock and seeing if that works? Maybe the problem is with the key (worn?) and not the lock?
Failing that, I would remove the lock, hold it upside down and spray wd40 into it (using the small white tube that comes with it) and see if any crap comes out.

There are several mentions of the UK switch in the forum and differences in wiring...  Here is the most relevant thread I found... it also seems Yuni parts may have had something but sadly they are no longer in business.

If it is just the key being fiddly then almost certainly a repair is the best route.  Great suggestions have already been made.

One thing I'd like to mention again is the number on the lock.  I had a used bike that came with an unmarked key that took a lot of jiggling to get to turn...  I ordered a new key from the number and it worked perfectly!  The key I got with the bike was just slightly different than the new key...  close enough to work with patience but not the correct one.

In any case, a good locksmith should be able to fix you up or you might even be able to fix it yourself with some care...  they aren't too complicated.
