Cleaning crankcase mating surfaces. was created by Jammyyammy
Hi - what is the best method of cleaning the crankcase mating surfaces. I haven’t actually split the cases yet, but planning ahead. Maybe tomorrow.
I guess dragging a ‘Stanley’ knife blade at a certain angle so that it doesn’t dig in will do the trick? That’s how I did it back in the day.
Or is there a better way?
Also, where the barrel fits onto the cases. Same method?
Any info much appreciated….
Thanks

I use a lot of brake cleaner. Let it soak a little bit then use an ice scraper or back drag your knife or ? Using the brake cleaner sometimes the gasket sealer wants to come off in layers but it works well.

Acetone softens Yamabond in my experience... Once I've scraped the best I can, the Acetone and a rag usually wipes off any thin residue left.

I just today used some Gumout carb cleaner and scraped it with a scrap of oak wood (3/4" x 1/4" and 8" long) The oak wood was cut flat enough to scrape, but it is not hard enough to scratch or gouge the aluminum. As the edge of the stick blunts, just trim it off square again and keep on. hope this helps.
