Is there a general consensus on transmission oil brand/type for my '74 360DT? Members have a favorite that they agree on (HA!)? Also, what are they using for oil injection? Thanks!

Here is a search with the first 5 or 6 past threads:

That should get you started, rather than a fight started!

Consensus?  Never will be.

I run the same oil in the gearbox as I run in all of my other two strokes, old and new.  Rotella 15w40.  Works great.  I've had samples analyzed and it works great.  You could spend a lot more but you really don't need to.  Its good stuff.

For oil injected bikes I run the super tech TCW-3 oil from walmart.  It is superior to whatever these bikes were designed to run but just about anything else is too.  You could find something that smokes less, I don't really care that much.  It does provide very good protection against wear, piston scuffing and deposit formation.

I like to try different oils...  I'm intrigued by the Legend Performance ZX two stroke oils and it's my current choice...  it has to be for a while since I bought a case.  (Seriously, it's good stuff and I got it mostly for my CRM250)

That said... and TurboDan might have a heart attack if he reads this... but I agree with his choices 100%.  Very good oils that are readily available anywhere in the country at good prices.  And especially with the autolube oil I think not mixing oils is very important.  (I completely drain and flush the autolube system when switching oils).

The one choice I don't agree with is using ATF in the trans...  both from personal experience and from research.
Here's an email I got from Maxima Lubricants a few years ago in response to my question on the topic of using ATF.  (Maxima sells a high-end ATF that costs more than their MTL so they aren't biased against a product they don't make)

Mark,
Thank you for contacting Maxima. There are unique things found in MC transmissions that aren't found in the operating regimes of an automatic transmission. These unique conditions are addressed by a properly formulated MC transmission/clutch oil. Lower fill volumes, lean angles and integrated manual clutches all stress the oil and cause phenomena like aeration and localized heating.
Not to mention, ATF isn't designed to protect straight-cut gears found in modern MC transmissions. Maxima MTL is a very popular line up for Maxima and is used extensively throughout the industry in both racing and recreation. MTL fluids pass the JASO credentialing certification for MA2 (wet clutch compatibility.) Perfectly match additives and base oils deliver unsurpassed protection.
MTL is recommended by the top clutch companies in the industry - companies like Hinson and Rekluse.
Sincerely,
DANNY MASSIE
