1974 DT175A was created by motovate
Starting to get to the To Do list on my 1973 DT175. Verified the vin with the USA Model Listing. The bike came with a plastic after market fuel tank so I'm not real sure what came with it new. Somewhere along the way I picked up a pretty good blue/white stock tank - pretty sure it is a 73A but could be a 74B. I'll need to do some searching to see if it is Yale Blue or a Balboa Blue tank needs de rusted inside as usual. I had a tank gas cap - that went on a sojourn - somewhere. I was wondering if there was a source for stock type aftermarket gas caps or other models/brands that will fit these tanks. I found a couple NOS on Partzilla and Bike bandit but $70 to 90+ dollars is not much interesting. I'm not restoring to original just getting it running good and looking decent. I'm sure as I get back into it I will have some questions. It did run OK when I got it- sorta didn't want to idle until good and warm - clean the carb type thing, tail light issues but fixed and never replaced on bike and headlight was a replacement but with a little paint it will be good, tires, all the normal things and whatever I find now. Figured I start with the cap and eBay. Thanks LBM

Probably would help to re-check the VIN... You've jumped around between describing it as a 73-74-75-76...
A 1974 "A" had a completely different paint scheme than the similarly painted 75 "B" or 76 "C". A and B tanks are the same shape with the A model having the hinged "flip top" cap and B having a removable twist off cap.
1976 C models had a different frame and different tank shape and tank mounting than the A and B.
So technically every year from 74-76 had a distinctively different tank... though an A tank will fit a B frame and vice-versa. 1976 C model tank only fits 1976.
I'm pretty sure the early non-locking cap fits the 75-76 locking cap models. I don't have a tank handy to check.
P.S. the above applies to US models.

Thanks - I did get myself confused on the 1973 model year. It is a 1974 which makes it a "A" on the Vin as far as the title says and by looking @ the USA List here. The Vin is 443008198. I did describe the used tank as possibly a 73A or74 B but I wasn't sure - pretty sure it is not a 73 anything. I do realize there are different paint schemes. The tank I have is the one I like. I probably should have describe it better the tank is blue and the graphics on the side are a white panel with the middle 1/3 as a Black section with 175 on it and as I remember the cap was twist off - tabs on the cap that go through notches in the tank but not screwed on or off. I looked on line but it is really crossed up. I saw supposed DT 175's as 74's with the same blue tank as I have , in Red & different blues, & a 1976 with the same graphics as this one - pretty sure they are even more confused then I am . One of these days I'll dig out my digital camera and take a few shots and down load them here to be sure. I'm going to keep looking for the one I had - it's hidden there somewhere.

1975 and 1976 had a very similar paint scheme that you've described. If the tank you have fits the 74 frame, it's a 75 tank.
69-71 CT1 cap reportedly fits the 75-76 tanks and is a lot cheaper.

Well Knowing 75 & 76's had similar paint schemes is good to know. I like the tank & it only has a couple of small dings. I'll probably just wash it good and maybe polish it a bit and clean the inside out good. At least at the time I bought it I was sure it would fit. The plastic desert tank is pretty ugly but holds gas. Thanks.
