Clutch wont disengage was created by AirborneSilva

So when I put the bike to sleep several months ago in the shed the clutch worked just fine. I decided to get off my butt and convert it to 12 volt so I can get it legal for the street. After doing the conversion I wanted to take if for a quick ride, so I pull in the clutch put it in first and it lurches forward and dies. Can there be anything done or does the clutch just need rebuilding? Thanks, Tony

It's common for the clutch plates to stick together when left for quite a while. With the engine off, try putting it in gear and rocking the bike back and forth. Also, with it running in neutral, try rolling it, jumping on, and then putting it in gear.

Thanks for the reply, I'll give your suggestions a try when I can. I did try pushing it then jumping on it a drop into gear it just locked up the back tire and died, guess I'm just too old and slow!

Got a decent hill close by?
You may have to drain the transmission, open the side case cover, take the clutch apart, and separate and clean the plates and discs.

I live in Florida, the biggest hills are ant hills! I thought about removing the cover but have never dealt with a clutch before, guess this will be my first time if I can't get your other suggestion to work. First I have to get my arm to heal, I believe I tore a tendon in my arm trying to lift the front end up a couple of steps, did I mention I'm getting old!

This will sound silly but simply tie the clutch lever to the handlebar tightly at least overnight. Nine times out of ten putting it in gear and rocking it the next day after letting it sit with the lever pulled will easily break it free.

Thanks Mark, doesn't sound silly at all and I'll go out now and zip tie the clutch lever!

If using a zip tie, might want to use some cardboard or something over the grip to prevent the tie from damaging it.

Start bike in neutral and let engine idle until fully warm. Face bike in direction that is most down hill. Power bike with legs in down hill direction. Roll on throttle to get rpms up then press down on shift lever at point where bike is rolling as fast as you can get it going. If bike goes and doesn’t stall, ride the piss out of it without stopping. Come back to house and have a beer.
