Speedometer Cable Replacement

Speedometer Cable Replacement was created by Kip

I'm in the midst of replacing the bearings and seals in my front hub on the 75 DT250 and am stumped as to how to remove the speedometer cable from the hub socket. Have the spring clip off and the cable exposed where it enters the hub. I thought It would just pull out but not so and don't want to force it.

Nothing on YouTube that relates to this vintage of bike so any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance,

Kip

First remove the circlip and the washer with the arms that drives the worm gear, then soak it in penetrating oil; and then get the torch out and heat it but don't overdue it. let it sit for a few hours and then lube it and heat it again. make a square end for a hex end screwdriver that fits in where the cable goes in. Best is one of those snap-on dog leg ratcheting screw drivers and put it in lock position. Now while it is heated up start trying to turn the screw driver back and forth until it starts to loosen. Force is bad back and forth gently is good. I have done this several times and it takes time but it will work. If you get to rammy you will break things

Maybe i've been lucky but in similar i've just levered against the top of the hole with pliers or even side cutters but trying not to cut it off. If it broke off at the bit you can see down in there you might have to undo the castle type nut --top bush thing, retainer we'll call it, & totally remove the gear the come up with a plan & heat it so nothing else left to get damaged. What "run103" says above is sounding a better option.

Hi Kip I guess I was assuming you got the remnants of the cable out. All I came to realize is you have to be patient with the penetrating oil and the heat treatments to get the oil into all the right places. I think one of these took me 3 or 4 days of heat and oil and try to turn the screw driver and it gradually started to move. once they start to move its just a matter of time After I get them moving and apart I run some valve grinding compound thru the bushings to grind off some of the rust and then brake clean all the compound out. After I get it running nice and free when I put it together I use some mercury outboard grease on the speedo inlet so water cannot get in there. Nothing dissolves that stuff

Thanks guys and much appreciated. Got the cable out with a bit penetrating oil and time to soak.

You know, you guys are absolutely great and can't thank you enough. Working in this bubble these days will hopefully pass but still don't think anything quite measure up to the support for this form.

Cheers and Happy New Year to all.

This socket is designed after an idea from DEET. Take a 12mm socket and your Dremel tool with a small grinder bit. Cut out the upper areas of the mouth of the socket to expose four "teeth" that will engage the four detents in the "nut" which is down in the hole. I have nine bikes, and the tool has worked in all of them without solvent or waiting. Clearly the cable itself must be removed before the tool is used.

As I say, all credit goes to DEET, who first thought it up and published the "how to" thread. All I did was learn how to follow directions!
