Exhaust gasket was created by Aubs

Hi , Ive just had delivery of exhaust gasket for my ex USA  1973 DT250   Part number 2481462310.  I expected an " O " ring but it is a 12inch length of rubber about 2mm thick.    It took a fortnight to get to Wales so I dont wish to cock it up when fitting.. Consequently Ime asking you out there to give me instructions on fitting. Just to clarify this gasket does not fit between exhaust and cylender head but between exhaust pipe and manifold..
Aubs from Wales.

Some folks are happy to use a single 'layer', others two. Whichever you decide, wrap it around the exhaust to determine the length you need and cut there. You then just force it into the gap between the exhaust and the manifold.

Like quite a few Yamaha parts now, you buy a fixed length and cut to the size required.

The manifold is two piece and does tap apart (it is a press fit). You might want to consider splitting the manifold to give it a good clean before re-assembling and fitting the new gasket. Some here have reported that they couldn't get a good seal until this was done.

Others here say that another good idea is to run a string of______(can't remember what it's called, but someone will remember and bail me out; high-temp silicone something or other?) out of its tube on a clean dry piece of metal or plastic (something it won't stick to), and then dry that til it's no longer tacky. Stays flexible and you can roll it up and use it to fill the gaps as well.

Help me out, some of you who use that other stuff...Please?

I think the person(s) that advocated the "homemade" strings suggested making them on wax paper?

Yes it was DEET and I have followed his recipe and had great results. It does take a bit of practice with applying the right thickness of goo to the wax paper. It's actually quite fun, like playing Play Doh with my grand daughter

When I said "exhaust", I really should have said the part of the manifold that you are going to insert the gasket into, just so that the length matches one or two times the circumference.
