Talking plastic sprockets i'd forgotten i'd mentioned ours. To clarify the ones we fitted weren't overlay but solid to the centre & we just drilled to fit the bolt pattern. So long ago but think we just tried them on farm bikes because they were wearing sprockets & chains at an alarming rate. But running sprocket deep in mud & cow dung does that lol. To be honest i don't recall if they lasted any better. But--i did have a steel overlay on my triumph metisse & was on there the whole time i raced it. Had to used that system as the bsa b31 rear wheel sprocket incorporated the brake drum, just off a road bike & was small, so overlaid 'big'.

So a little up date ….

The barrel has been cleaned  at the vapour blasters and on assessment and matching to a 0.5 and a 0.75 they think it needs a 1.0. 4th over due to some minor corrosion….

Found what I need  in the US …. After accepting the ridiculous fluctuations in eBay shipping costs I got a piston and ring set from different sellers …. Paying more for the shipping than the item and getting hit for import tax does take the edge off international purchases tbh ….

let’s hope the 4th over does the job !!

Additionally I have purchased the correct front fender with a heavy dollop of patina which works well with the rest of the bike …. so pleased with that. Just a 4 o clock kick start to find …. I’m thinking I may well have to fabricate one … it won’t be original but will look right…

cheers

Shipping costs, like all things are expensive where old bikes are involved.
The last engine i unseized was a HT1. Barrel and crank solid. Someone had raised the barrel to examine the crank and left the whole lot open. I filled the crank case up to the top with Evaporust. I also put it down the bore as the ports were covered. One day later, the whole lot came free. Bit gritty but it all came free. Even i thought that was good. That stuff de rusts cylinders and has done a mint job on petrol taps and carbs too.
Yours looks like it was parked in the sea. Glad to see you got it all freed off though.

… I’m normally ok with the shipping costs  but when a set of rings costs double the cost of the piston shipping then there’s got to be something wrong …..
piston shipping-$10
rings shipping -$20

…. ultimately it’s just a matter of economics and the most viable cost options ….. I needed the 4th over to get the engine back together so I just needed to suck it up and get them bought !!!!

cheers

Have you tried reaching out to Enduronut?
I understand he's got a good supply of pistons and rings.

Thanks Pete

I have the piston and rings on the way … I’ve bought various parts from enduronut so should have considered the option …

  Morning….
cold and crisp here in the UK this morning….
having a go at the replacement seals now the parts are back from the rebore etc …..
the exhaust port is more corroded than I had realised… apart from getting oily and carbon deposits … is there any benefit of filling and smoothing with the appropriate product?

cheers
