OK, so tell me what else doesn't work without the engine running, before I think the whole electrical system is faulty. Indicators, brake lights? Horn?

As I recall, just the headlight and speedo/tacho illumination lights.
Horn, indicators, brake lights (and maybe rear light on second ignition switch setting) work off the battery.

Get a decent battery installed before you condemn anything... my guess is your 4.6 volts goes right to zero under any load.

Update on this. After virtually memorising the wiring diagramme I now have brake lights, horn and back light working. No indicatoers yet as I don't have any, just the flasher relay. I fitted a new battery early on, the original was wasted. Tank on tomorrow!!
